Default Engine shroud/air duct removable w/ motor in place?

I'm just wondering if the engine shroud comes out w/ the motor in place or only if you drop/remove the motor from the car.

Thanks.

This is what you get out, plus the gearbox.

Just to clarify.

Can this piece be removed w/ the engine in the car?

Yes, but you'll have to take almost everything off the top of the motor, and you may want to lower it slightly to get to all the bolts across the back (front of car) away from the chassis-to-tins seal.

Yes. I didn't need to lower the engine.

Thanks guys!

B. Elliott's "The adventure continues" thread has me inspired to tear down and beautify some things.

I need to tear down the top end anyway because my fan needs replacing and I need to loosen the motor mounts too because I still need to reinforce the carrier.

Looks like I'm going to be trying to knock out many birds early on in 2012.

Do the port stacks have to be removed to take out the shroud, or does it slip around them?

Well, the stacks are definitely keeping the shroud from coming off, which means the fuel injectors, rails and lines will have to come off as well. Man, I'm starting to run out of room to set parts down!

Everything has to come off. This is a good time to pull the injectors and send them off to Witchhunter (or the like) for rebuilding. Check all the hoses & seals, etc.

Also, after the shroud is removed you'll have access to the knock sensors. Might as well test them and replace if necessary.

I found a video which shows how to test a knock sensor, but it's only for a single wire k/s. The procedure is very straight forward for the single wire... Connect the positive lead from a multimeter to the sensor plug, connect the negative lead to graound, then tap near the sensor with something metallic and watch for a/c voltage generation.

Our Bosch three wire sensors have three prongs; two signal inputs and one shield wire. Can't find anything online for testing these.
