Default 1990 911-964 LT and Rt heater motors

My 1990 964 Cab needs both Lt and Rt heater motors. These babbies are really expensive and both of mine need replaced/repaired. I am hopeful that maybe one can be fixed with just lubricant. Does anybody know if these can be repaired, maybe brushes replaced or am I stuck buying new/used. Any thoughts on used vs new?

New is very expensive.
I'd check the dismantlers, such as DC Automotive.

Is your diagnosis factual? i.e. relays and fuses overridden and still no fan(s)?

The left is out completely and the right runs but periodically makes a howling/screaching noise. I have read that lubricant may work. I just want to be sure that I don't have to go back in in short order. Used are much better priced (DC auto) than new. Does anybody know if these can be repaired?

Chris, if you're going to KEEP this car, spring for new fan motors. This would be my rationale were it me, especially after seeing a fairly detailed photographic account of the procedure to gain access to accomplish this feat. Check over on p-car.com for the thread related to AC condenser replacement, as it shows a lot related to the job you'll possibly be undertaking. Also, be sure to ask someone who KNOWS exactly the proper procedure of what it entails, A to Z. As I remember, its a bitch. I was going to trace out a rattle that I suspected came from inside that blower-flappers-fans assembly, and after seeing what was entailed opted to just ignore the noise with volume control **** on the radio. You don't want to do this procedure again for a LONG time. CHEERS.

It's a PITA but like most everything else will be easier the second time. I'd consider buying used but lube the snot out of both of them before reinstalling. I don't really run the blowers a whole lot having a Targa in OH (similar to your Cab in OH). If I lived in Texas I might opt for new all the way.

The right one can be found on german ebay for a pittance (around 150$ new).
The left one is the Porsche exclusive one. Painfully expensive.

If I remember correctly search is your friend. I saw a post on here from some one who managed to fit a right hand side motor into the left side using a dremel to cut to ear tabs off. Since right hand motors are considerably cheaper it seemed a good idea. I am sorry I do not remember who uploaded the original post.

The right and left fan rotate in opposite direction, so they are not interchangeable. My advice, buy a couple of good used ones, lubricate the bearings with some good oil, let the oil soak in, then apply more oil until the bearings are saturated, it will take you several days. I did mine 3 years ago and they are still quiet.

Found this rennlist link from 2005. It has great picts as well as advice. Certainly describes the frustration. Also describes changing out right to left and or left to right motors. Nobody that I have communicated with has yet to say these motors can be repaired so I have to assume that they cannot. There is a site on ebay that sells brushes for motors(see below) and Porsche is listed so I emailed to ask if the brushes would work specifically for these motors. The response was that he was not certain.

Here's my email to Sam at parts@mbusa-parts.com

I own a 1990 Porsche 911-964 with the left blower motor not working and the right is making noise. I want to first replace the brushes to attempt a fix before I replace the motors. Do you have replacement brushes for this vehicle?

The motor part numbers are as follows:

Blower motor assembly left side #964-572-015-01
Blower motor assembly right side #964-572-016-01

RESPONSE:
hi, thanks for writing and sorry for the delayed response.

911 blower motors are a little tricky. some have curved or arched brushes, and some have normal straight brushes. the best way to tell is to visually inspect them.

if they are straight, then this kit should work for you. if they are arched, then you may have to just buy new motors.

hope this helps.

thanks
sam

Refer to this link for lube job on the fan bearings>>

I have 2 spare blowers, but since A/C is essential were I live, there not for sale....however, I'd be interested in buying yours if you decide to replace yours. I'd like to try and take one apart to see if they're repairable.

I was going to attempt to get mine fixed as well...well worth the effort due to replacement cost. If a fix could be done I suspect that we would have heard of it...keep hope alive.

If you change your mind and want to sell yours, just let me know. I will wait until the Spring now to work on mine.

Always do a search before asking a question. The subject of trying to repair or lube the bearings on blowers has already been discussed in detail.

FWIW, I sourced a used motor and it is working fine 1 year+. At the price I paid vs. new, I am saving money even if i have to replace the used one every year or so, which I don't expect.
