You can only unlock the door with the key on the passenger side door - it doesn't work for the drivers door.

Yep, thats correct and if you have no battery, the only door you can open with the key is the passenger door. (which is a good thing to be aware of!)

I'm pretty sure I've opened mine from the drivers side, but being ROW does that make any difference?
It was a while ago, so my memory maybe playing tricks, and its something I almost want to try now just to see....

Same on my 94 ROW in Bahrain... I can open the door without battery, but it takes some effort compared to doing it with the battery attached.

I'll try again , but mine gives no sign of working without battery. No resistance, no clicks, it doesn't feel there is anything mechanical moving when you turn the key...

Mine opens with a key on the driver's side too. If yours doesn't, it means the linkage from the key cylinder has become disconnected from the lock mechanism.
I learned this the hard way when I converted to 993 handles on my car, and found the driver's key didn't work when I reassembled the first time ... so, I opened it up, did it again.
Long time ago, but it seems to me it was an adjustable linkage that's held to the lock cylinder with a single screw that clamps the bits together on a spline ... easy to assemble it incorrectly, or have it slip out of adjustment if the screw comes loose.

So...if everything works properly, one should be able to mechanically unlock either door with the key and no battery/dead battery? opposite question: can one LOCK the car from either side with no battery/dead battery? Or is this just a way to safeguard opening with a dead battery.

My '91 C2 Coupe is currently sitting in my garage w/ the battery disconnected and the doors unlocked. I just tried to lock it w/ the key on both doors and there is no action taken. I cannot manually lock the driver's door w/ the inside ****. It simply doesn't turn. I can lock the pass. door w/ the inside **** and the key does mechanically unlock the door. So there you have it. If locked out of the car w/ a dead battery, the pass. doorlock should retain mechanical ability to unlock the door and get into the car.
