Default Cage recommendations

As I no longer have the rear seats, just the RS carpets, I've been thinking about puting a cage in the car.
But I'm really not sure what to do, I do the odd track day, the wife likes to join me in the odd weekend excursion and for her a full harness probably wouldn't do.
With all the above in mind, does anyone have any recommendations on a cage? I was thinking about the build it yourself mantra that I seem to have going on in my head, but I'm not sure if that would cut the mustard.

So a little help would be appreciated.

Plenty of RSs fitted with cages just have the normal 3 point belt for the passenger and most have both a harness and 3 point for the driver. Just make sure the cage is well padded for road use when you're not wearing a helmet.

Yes will take note of what Steve B said, make sure there's padding when not using a helmet!

Have a look at Heigo, my uncle used a a full heigo cage in his RS touring. Lovely!

Make sure to use padding EVEN when using a helmet.

I always feel unconfortable in a car with a full cage when not wearing a helmet, even with padding fitted. If you are going to use your car on the road then I would consider a rollbar (or half cage) rather than a full cage. I have just bought one from Heigo (this one, with the optional harness bar and finished in black) as I wanted something that I could use comfortably on the road but that would give a little more rollover protection on track as well as providing a solid mount point for the harnesses. I think KaiB has the same model in his pics here. I have not fitted mine yet, but it mounts to the existing front and rear seatbelt points and, in theory, should take less than an hour to fit once the seats are out.

I paid the online price which came to just over 900 Euros plus shipping, you might be able to get some discount if you can do it through your local specialist as a trade order. Ordering was easy, I ordered direct after exhanging a few emails, I think you can also buy through FVD. Delivery was originally quoted at 6-8 weeks but it was 12 weeks and several frustrated emails before I received it, I think they are suffering with a lack of staff but communication was poor to say the least. That said, it looks to be a very nice product.

Heigo is nice, I have a full cage in my car. But communication can be poor and delivery time can be long so my tip is to go through an established "heigo dealer" because they get better service than "the guy on the street". It's not more expensive and it hasn't have to be FVD, I'm sure there are many others in the UK.

The Heigo is indeed nice, but also tardy.

It (the delivery) held the build of my car by six weeks at least.

I covered my DAS bar with dual density stuff. Link. I don't plan on hitting my head on it to give a review of how it works, but it makes me feel better knowing its there.

Speak to Safety Devices or one of their UK agents for an off the shelf bolt in item. Or go to Custom Cages and ask them for a kit of tubes to make a rear cage and have a good cage fabricator (Nskis Neil would seem a good choice) fabricate a custom one for you to your own specification.

At the risk of offending Heigo owners, I think they're a lot more about form than function.

I've Heigo installed in a 964, it was installed by a PO, I dislike it, it's untidy and it's coming out soon ! (but won't be for sale I'm afraid)

I've also got a welded in, T45 CDS, hand fabricated and TIG ed cage installed in a '73 car, it's a work of art and makes the Heigo bolt in cage design and installation look positively crude (BTW, I'm not suggesting you go for a weld in cage)

I think it depends what the OP is looking for. If you want a full cage and your objective is strength and chassis rigidity, then I would agree that a custom built weld in cage is certainly the way to go. If he wants something for a bit more rollover protection, that does not require modification to the car and can be easily removed later then I think the Heigo is a great option. I looked at the usual bolt in alternatives (Safety Devices, DAS) and, for me, the Heigo was the best in terms of quality, finish and, dare I say it, aesthetics.

Nicest welds I've ever seen performed on something as awkward to reach in places as a cage!
