Default a few questions

My carrera 2 is going to need an engine and looking through porsche's motor history there is a HUGE amount of options available. as I am not very mechanical I was thinking some advice would help me make a reasonable choice. so far I know I want to stay with a 3.6L because I would not have to modify the body to accept a larger motor or a water cooled. also (from reading here thanks rennlist threads) I know I should stay away from early 3.6L motors. that leaves me with a few years of the 964's motor. which year and which version do you think I should install and why? what are your particular years choices strengths and weaknesses? would a 993's engine fit without major modification?

now on to a single exterior question. I always had loved the look of the center taillight reflector with the blacked out PORSCHE lettering. would that reflector fit a 964 or would it require drilling holes or any other modification?

thanks to everyone in advance for any advice

You don't have to stay away from the earlier motors. Most of them have been fixed by now anyway. You just want the best engine with the most amount of history on it.

It would take some work for a 993 motor. It did have a different fuel delievery and management system. You would probably want to get a whole motor and DME if you can find one.

Although it would be awesome to have a 3.8 Variocam in a 964.

Greetings,

There's a turbo 3.3 on Ebay right now for $7k item #130498234143 (no affiliation) - not sure if it's a good option (someone else can chime in) but it should fit well since that's the 964 turbo motor. I would think a 993 rammer motor would run in the $12k realm with the DME but I could be all wet. This is a decent little parts search tool for dismantlers - www.car-part.com

The center reflector from an earlier car doesn't bolt up since they have different profiles. Not sure what the options are there - sorry.

Best of luck finding a new motor. Steer clear of Motor Miester; lots of bad press.

What happened to the old motor? Can it be re-built?

If not, will you be parting it out? Lots of folks here would be willing to off-set your new motor expense buying bits from the existing, defunct motor. I, for example, and looking for the tin bits that soround the motor and would happily pay for parts in reasonable condition.

Cheers

P.O threw a bearing right through the cases (from what he told me) and he sold the scrap motor and trans (not sure why he sold trans seems he would have needed that had he found a motor). he lost interest in looking for a replacement and sold the chassis to me. I will not lose interest in looking for a motor though since this is my very first porsche and I have wanted one for the better part of 30 odd years or so.

wish I did have the old motor trans though.

Look at the positive side, maybe you'll find a Euro 993 six speed unit and be better off?!

I may have what you need if you want something with a little more HP. I have a 1990 C4 was crunched last year. It's been sitting in the garage while I have contemplated dismantling and selling off the pieces. Send me a PM if you're interested and I'll give you the details. It has about 6K on a rebuild. Tranny is a C4 though.
