Default Tiptronic problem

I have a problem that appears to have resurfaced after a couple of years. When driving in manual mode the indicator changes to "D" and the car goes into third gear and stays there, and the tip light comes on. ( That'll really kill your 0-60 times ) The shop that worked on the car before replaced a "position sensor" 96460611500. I can't get to my PET CD or shop mauals, can someone tell me where this particular sensor is located?

I'm guessing that I'll have to take it in to check the codes, but I'd like to visually inspect the part that was replaced previously, if possible. ( and maybe hit it with a hammer )

Thanks,
Jason

Hi Jason,

That part number is for "throttle-valve switch" on the throttle body

BLK964, i had the same problem a few months ago. The tip goes into "limp home mode", 3rd gear. All that needed doing was the connection to the throttle valve switch cleaned. Apparently the all the sensors report to the DME and when the throttle sensor position didnt match what was supposed to be happening according to other sensors the tip shifted into limp home mode. Try disconnecting your battery for 30 minutes or so to reset the DME and clean that darned switch. Hopefully the tip warning light will not reappear!

That's right....disconnect the battery...also, check to see if all the relays are in and tight. I had, believe it or not, my abs relay come loose and it caused the same problem.

Also, I think there is a thread on here about this somewhere in the archives. Forgot, mine also did it in the rain once....turning off the car actually "resets" its, but the battery disconnect and reconnect works best.

Thanks guys. That's what I was hoping to hear. I'll try cleaning it up and doing a DME reset.

Hi chaps

Same trouble here. Tiptronic warning light came on whilst driving - now on all the time, stuck in
'limp home' mode.

Things I've tried:
1. Disconnecting battery for 20min+
2. Played about with the throttle position connector (too dark outside to clean it)
3. Removed and reseated relays (ABS, oilcooler)

Couple of questions:

When I turn the key to the second position, I get two rapid relay clicks from the ABS pump...
I can't remember if it always did that?

If it were the ABS relay, wouldn't the ABS light come on?

Can low transmission oil give this symptom? - I don't see a sensor for fluid level on any diagrams.

Is it the throttle position sensor or the connector which needed cleaning?

I tried a trick which I'd heard before about starting the car in neutral to bypass the 'limp mode'.
It did let me briefly go into manual mode, but soon defaulted back to 'D' limp.

Any more details on the successful resolutions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm still getting the issue once every couple of days. When the fault occurs I get the following two
error codes:

Motronic DME:
32 - Knock sensor 2

Tiptronic:
22 - load signal

Any ideas what is likely to generate these two?

I would check connector T41 (12 pin connector) under left seat for a bad or loose connections from TIP sensors to DME. Also re-seat the DME connector. I don't think you have TIP problem but faulty inputs to the DME which can put the TIP ECU in limp mode. Do all this checking with the battery disconnected. What year is your car? 1992 ?

Thanks for that Mojo

Yep, I did give disconnect/ reconnect both the DME and Tip ECU. I just realised that I added this to different thread to the original one here: https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...p-problem.html

I'm inclined to agree that the problem isn't with the Tip directly. Both errors 32 (DME) and 22 (Tip) turn up together - it's like there's a glitch with the airflow meter or something that trips the knock sensor and affects both units.

My car is a '91.

What's the most likely culprit to cause a code 32 (knock sensor 2) error?

Motronic DME:
32 - Clutch Pedal Missing

Tiptronic:
22 - Oversize brake pedal found

Any ideas what is likely to generate these two?

Oyy! Just 'cos I don't play the Hokey Cokey whilst driving... put your left foot in, take your left foot out, in, out, in, out....

Gears are overrated anyway, 'limp home' mode is the future. One journey - one gear. Less is more.

Richie,
Check the green connector for #2 knock sensor located over the alternator fan housing. Unfortunate, I just sent my car to Kauai so I can't check against the actual car. If you're using the Hammer, it should also say if the sensor signal is "not plausible", "not present" "grounded" , or "shorted". The codecould be generated from a faulty connection, or actual sensor.

Default 'Limp' mode once again

Here we go again

Going to work in 3rd gear is becoming an annual ritual. As soon as the weather
gets down to 0°c this problem shows up again. I just don't get it - if it's related to
the cold, how come the problem doesn't go away once the car has warmed up?

I turn the ignition key, there is a double-click from a relay in the tip ecu, then
the tip warning light comes on and stays on.

I'm going to put in an order for a new throttle position switch (964.606.115.00)
in the morning. Can anyone think of anything else I can add to the order which
might be causing the dreaded 'limp' mode?
