Default After changing out FVD chip to Steve Wong, car won't start

My I purchased my car it had an FVD chip installed. Realizing the chip is made for 93 octane and I only have 91/92 in my area, I removed the FVD chip and installed the stock one (previous owner left in the glove box).

When I turn the key I get a CEL...when I start the car the ignition keeps firing but the car won't start. After putting back in the old FVD chip, the car starts fine.

So I figured it was a bad OEM chip.

I just bought a Steve Wong chip and get the exact same issue. When I turn the key the ignition cranks but it won't start.

I'm putting in the new chips in the exact same orientation of the original FVD chip (with the small notch).

Any ideas? Do I need to unplug the battery and let the computer reset? I asked Steve about that before I purchased it and he said I won't have to do that.

Thanks
Yep, after making my thread i tried a few more combination of searches and found that thread. My board had that same adapter...after removing it and installing the Wong chip, my car runs great.

I had the same adapter on my 1991 C4 with the FVD chip. I was wondering what that plate was, but noticed it had a marker pen mark: "98". I figured it was connected to the FVD chip (98 octane or something), so I removed both and installed the Steve Wing chip.Runs great.

FVD Chip with green adapter board underneath

Adapter board out

98 Octane?
Giving this thread a bump, with a few pics. I installed the Steve Wong 93 Octane muffler/cat delete chip in my '90 C2 this afternoon. A 2014 FVD chip had been installed by the prior owner, but I didn't see/think to remove the adapter board underneath. The engine cranked but wouldn't start.

Google search led me to this thread. Fifteen minutes later I had the offending adapter board out, the Steve Wong chip, and reinstalled the motronic. Car cranked over immediately, and drive like a peach.

Thanks for this thread, saved my butt

^ I installed the same chip on my 964 about 2 years ago. First time opening the unit was quite an adventure

The installation was a bit unnerving at times, and the written directions omitted a few steps. Once you get the hang of it (read second install to remove the vestigial FVD adapter board) it takes about twenty minutes to remove and install.

These links were helpful:

Prying the two plastic snaps open by the ribbon is easy enough, but you'll wish you had a third hand while you're working the other connector end. You need to pry those two retaining tabs open while pulling up at the other end of the circuit board (by the ribbon). The upward pressure on the ribbon end of the board keeps the tabs from locking again, and allows the upper circuit board to release itself from the connector end.

I put some photos and instructions in the 964 DIY section that might be helpful (see step #10).

Great thread Jason.

Here is a YouTube video that also does a nice job walking you through the key steps. Visualization is most helpful. Interesting to note he doesn't even use a screw driver to press in the two tabs securing the circuit board to the connector end. I would suggest adding that step after lifting the board up by the ribbon end, and prior to try to pull the upper circuit board out.

I have no point of reference for the stock chip, but compared to the FVD chip I've been driving with the past 10,000 miles the Steve Wong chip provides noticeably more kick at 2600 to 3000 RPM, no more bogging down when cold, and the car is just more fun to drive!

The video shows an older pre-964 ECU.

Yup, that looked way too easy. I also noticed the chip is in a different location.
