Default 993 Steering wheel on a 964

Greeting all, I am new to this forum and seeking some assistance. After 20 years it is time to replace the steering wheel on my 964C2 (Honestly it is long overdue). I have a 993 Wheel w/airbag from a 1996 C4S

What will I need to swap this out ?

Any help you can give this noob will be much appreciated

Vic

Hi Vic It will go on but as far as the airbag working I would not plug it in even if it will.. Is the wheel a 3 spoke?? I just put a 3 spoke off a 996 on mine.. 993 three spokes are worth some money, they came in some c4s and twin turbos.. Will it ever get warm.........

Thanks for the response and encouragement...Is there some danger in connecting the airbag ?

I was originally going to get a wheel without airbag (I hate the thing) but this wheel came along at a price I could not pass up,,It looks as if I need some parts? can you tell from the pics what I need (Other than the steering column shroud from a 993? I have grown weary of the 90s style wheen I have and even though its not the 3 spoke, its an improvement over the original!
964 wheel is on the left

This is the back of the 993 wheel

I just took a 993 out of my c2 to put the 996 in.. plastic is fine.. Dont put the washer on the main nut.. 993 is a lil.bigger, you want as many threads as possible. You are right! A great upgrade factory wheel is ugly.... As far as airbag, did not do that much research, but I am sure the ohms going across the plug are different.. Not worth the thing blowing up in your face ugggg.

So the 993 wheel I have is not missing anything??? , the 964 wheel has the metal plate with spring loaded contact which I assume is for the horn (I do want the horn to work) Dont much case about self cancelling turn signal but it would be nice if that worked as well)

My father got his arm broken by a Mercedes air bag and my sister in law got burned by one so I will just put a resistor in line to cancel the warning light..Airbag is OK for the passenger but I choose Not to have it

I think you will have to change out the steering shaft and plastic surround to run a 993/996 wheel.

Had to modify the 996 to make work as far as the 993 it should be fine. Unless there is a difference in early 993 to the later ones.. Did you slide the 993 wheel on yet??? I know for a fact I did not replace any shrouds.. had to modify so I could install the lever that controls the c2 turbo tach. Goes on the other side of the cruise... I did lose the horn but modified the cruise handle so when you push forward you have the horn... Alot to go through but really wanted a 3 spoke..

Havent removed the wheel from my 964 yet (hafta get the 24mm socket) If I am not gonna get horn AND turn signal cancel I think I will just sell the 993 wheel and go to a Non airbag wheel, The surround isnt a big issue but to change out the steering shaft and not have horn, etc does not make a whole lot of sense

Oh for the days when you could just swap things out (VW Beetles)

993's and 996's use the same shaft.

i researched this question before and there are some good threads if you do a search.

just to clarify this thread, sounds like:

Silvertarga question = can a 964 wheel be replaced with 993 wheel?

tim911pcar = 964 wheel, replaced with 993 wheel, replaced with 996 wheel ... so he is not really answering your question as there were probably mods done to switch from 964 to the 993 wheel originally.

from my research, 964 to 993 wheel = not easy!! you'll find the how-to easily in the forum here.

When I sold my 993 I pulled my 996 3 spoke to put in my next pCar. I just assumed that the 964 would be the same. So I get my 964 and the first thing I do is pull the wheel to put on my nice 3 spoke, it did not fit at all.

I had to shave the back of the 996 wheel to make the wheel fit.Did not on the 993. I did not use the clock spring for either wheel, 993 or 996. With that said I lost horn and blinker turn off... The 996 wheel I had to put a huge spacer on the main nut so It would snug up. The 993 is the otherway. not so many threads. I will look monday, my car is at my shop Will be easy to compare I have the three wheels off right now. 964 993 996. I do wish I just would of went with the sportwheel with out air bag The thick one Find my self driving with my blinker on!!!

yep .. so why is tim911pcar talking about going from a 993 to 996 wheel? .. when the question is 964 to 993 (or 996).

One person in this thread suggests that going from 964 to 993, it is only the plastic surround that causes a problem ...
