Very true, but the one part that most threatens to fail costs more than you'll pay for the whole car...

I don't really understand the daily driving comments?
For me the 996 would be a better DD because of the climate and where I live....often wet and cold and the traffic normally very heavy and slow moving. So for me the 996 beats the 964 as a DD because of:

1. Better HVAC/air conditioning system for comfortable journeys and faster de-misting/de-icing
2. Better Window wipers
3. Better fuel economy (it's expensive here!)
4. Benign handling compared to the 964
5. Better turning circle, so easier to manouver in tight spaces
6. Lighter clutch pedal, so less stain on the legs
7. Better lights as standard

This is why I have a 986 as a DD and the 964 to enjoy at weekends....although I do use the latter as a DD on Fridays to keep it ticking over

That sounds like it is a receipt for a intermediate shaft failure on a 996.

IMS failure is a much discussed subject on 996/997/boxster forums. I think we have yet to hear of a definitive reason of why it happens. There are popular theories but very few facts on the subject. With 6 years and 109,000 miles on my own M96 engine, it's yet to happen. Just like it's yet to happen on the majority of engines.

Easy decision:

Unless it's an 04/05 GT3 it has to be a 964

where there is smoke there is fire.

When the did the water cooled engines they redid the oil system.

There is a reason why Porsche returned to a dry sump in 2009.

Totally agree. The GT3 is a different animal altogether! Love that engine!

I've owned two 964's and two 996's. If it's a weekend car, I'd get the 964. If it's going to be driven daily, I'd get the 996. Either way, they are both great cars, just different.

Don't want to offend anyone but IMO Porsche dropped the ball with the 996. Styling is lacking due to better aerodynamics the headlights (WTF). The 3.4 was well lets face it a waste of $$ and a bad decision. The 3.6 and C4S is a superior car over the earlier models but still nothing to write home about. The lack of road feel, cable shifter and nagging issues oh and yes headlights make me stay away. I prefer my 928 GTS any day of the week over a 996. The 996 feels more like a GT than a sports car and the GTS is a superior GT car all around. The only 996's I would ever consider owning would be a 996 C2S/4S but too heavy. the 996TT or the 996GT3. Although the n/a 996 would still be my last choice over any 911 to own. If you have the money buy the TT or GT3 otherwise save up and buy a 997S (.2 if you can afford it) or go with a 964 or 993.

I rented a 996 once and compared it to a 993 in one of my old posts:

https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...own-993-a.html

If you're looking for a DD, get the 996 because it will be easier to live with and it's still a fun car.

First of all thank you for all the info and suggestions, I appreciate the help.
From what I've read (not just on rennlist) it seems that the 996 is just not in the same level the 964 is, which I can see how that could be.

Although I prefer the lines of the 964 more over the 996, the interior of the 996 has a very special place in my heart. (Next to 917)

When I was 7 my father owned a Black on black C4 and I used to cherish sitting on the back seat divider and listening to the wonderful engine. Although I later found out it had a special exhaust system, which was disappointing.

Back on topic though right now I am leaning alot towards the 964 just in fear that the 996 will be to watered down to taste the beauty.

The best of both worlds ... great Daily driver and Air Cooled!
The 993 is nothing but a more expensive 964 with Japanese style un 911 style squashed down lights and a fatter ***.
