Take apart aero mirros before they go to paintshop?
Has anybody done this and have input? I guess it starts with the glass but the PET and just looking at them gives no natural way to start.

Use a thin screwdriver through the little hole at the bottom of the housing. In there you can twist/turn an screw/fastener and the glass will pop out.

+1 on the flat head screwdriver.
I wouldn't take apart the rest of the mirror. Just twist it half-way and paint it. I've painted 2 sets that way with no issues. Taking it apart is a real pain in the ***. Actually, the real pain in the *** is putting it back together.
What color are you painting them? Blue to match the wheels and the script?

Thanks will try that trick Ilko it is actually for my "new" red 964 C2, 1991 B so it is has flags and D90:s.
Just putting on Cup:I:s and aero mirrors. The white stays with white mirrors in spite of Your stong recommendation
Have understood taking them apart with the small springs and everything can be bummer...

Taking the mirrors apart is easy as pie, you just need the right tool. As said before use a flat screwdriver through the small slot in the bottom of the mirror, you want to turn the locking ring about 3/4" or 20m/m then the mirror will come out, again you may have to help it a bit, but be careful not to break it.
To take the base off the mirror housing is a bit more difficult unless you have this tool, you can make one up yourself, or you can do as Ilko said and just turn the base 90 degree.
If you want more info on the tool, I will be more than happy to help.

To replace it is possible to make a spring clamp out of washers. A search should quickly find you the info you need.
Be more careful than I was when I constructed mine. I had just picked them up fresh from the body shop and was in a real hurry to get them on the car; I slipped with a screwdriver and took the paint right off the side of one. Ended up waiting another two days and paying another $70, however it was nothing to the embarrassment I felt in front of the 3 guys in the paint shop!

If you do decide to enter the world-of-hurt that is disassembling aero mirrors,
here's a photo of what you'll be up against. I tried fabricating all sorts of tools,
but the combination of pressurising the spring whilst twisting the spindle makes
it very tricky.
In the end, I placed a piece of 15mm copper tube vertically in a workbench.
Crushed the end into a rough triangular shape (to match the splines in the
spindle). Then I impaled the the unit on the pipe so that the pipe sits within the
spline hole. With all of my body weight pushing down on the unit I could only just
twist the spindle to the correct position to release.
It was a real struggle.
Good luck

Additional info on the mirrors. I just took out the glass from the mirrors, not completely straight forward a few things that need to be added. On the backside of the glas there are two plastic rings that You turm back and forth to open and close "the lock". To take the glass out this is the way in detail.
You see the little plastic thing if You look in the little hole in the bottom of the house. BUT You also see it if You push the mirror as far up as You can, that is to push the mirror in the way You see the sky. Now, I'm not sure this is for both LHD and RHD cars/mirrors. This is for a LHS car. Put the small screwdriver in the hole and push the the small "saw formed" plastic piece against the car on the driver side and out from the car on the passenger side. The glass pops out straight away. I had a hard time to decide which way to push it on the passenger side, apart from that it is very straight forward.
See the very ruff pictures. And No I will not take the base away...
