We chose the GT3RS gearbox because of the 9m 3.8HL engine we've got planned for this car. It's the same engine package that is now in the black 9m93RS Widebody, to see why the GT3 box is an obvious choice take a look at the dyno sheet below which compares it to the same customer's 997GT3RS. At some point you have to assume that Porsche know what they are doing when they choose gear ratios, so since there is very little difference in the performance, torque & rev range between the two engines going for a brand new 997GT3RS gearbox actually works out cheaper than replicating it with a re-geared 993 6 speed. The bonus is the accuracy of the cable change system, it is simply streets better than the 964/993 rod change.

We've ran GT3's on track for years and other than syncro & diff wear we've not uncovered any issues, so I suspect that the problems you are facing with the GT2 & turbo boxes are more as a result of the torque output of modified turbo engines than an inherrant fault in the design?
Or to put it in other words: because we can and it's cool!

Respect Colin.....

YES!!

Marc confirmed today that we are finally picking up the finished bodyshell next Wednesday - which is perfect timing because the next 9m93RS shell is ready to go & we can get straight into the painting now that Kermit is green again. Fab shop will be kept busy with another Speedster conversion, so it's definitely full steam ahead for 9m Panelcraft.

The engine cases are now fully machined so we'll also be seeing more progress as soon as Singer's next engine is done. Can't wait.

The good news is that we finally picked up the bodyshell at the end of last week, the bad news is that Marc is not happy with the finish so I think it will have to be re-done. This was all down to unforseen problems with the e-coating plant which forced Marc to agree to an alternative "cold-galvanising" corrosion protection system at the 11th hour. Despite assurances to the contrary, the process has left imperfections in the finish which will take too long to remove, so although it will have to be redone we've been promised a very fast turnaround.

One step forward, two steps back....

Obviously the lack of a shell we can work on is now delaying the start of the panel fitting & painting, so in the meantime we're working on the vehicle mechanical parts started working through the engineering design work on the custom parts, like the M72 centrelock wheel spindles & central filler for the 964 plastic tank. We've managed to get hold of a sample spindle for a 930 (see photos) which I am going to use to reverse-engineer & then redesign the original 964 rear & 993 front hubs. Similarly we've also worked out where we can fit the central fuel filler in the 964 tank, so I've also got to design a custom filler plate which will incorporate a retro-style chrome filler cap.

I've also made a start on the scheming for the wiring harnesses - plural. The entire car is going to be wired with a Motec PDM (power distribution module) which is a solid state unit that replaces all the fuses & relays. The engine will be equipped with a Motec M800 on its own separate harness.

Colin,

which process would you recommend, cold-galvanizing or ecoating? is the galvanizing process just a spray?

thanks

From our limited experience I would say that e-coating is the preferred process due to the cleanliness of the finish, however the problem is finding an e-coat plant large enough to take a bodyshell. We used the one commercially available line in the UK, however just when this shell was ready to be dropped off PPG closed the plant, pulled out the equipment & shipped it to China. There is a possibility that another one will be available soon, but until this is confirmed the cold-galv system looks preferable (finish problem aside).

I do know that some people recommend powder coating bodyshells but from what I have seen because the paint does not flow into cavities and seams this will probably lead to problems with corrosion once any water starts to penetrate the joints.

Any particular reason that the left and right front panels are still on the shell? They will ultimately be scrapped and changed for those gorgeous carbon panels, which have been showed off earlier!!!

Simple answer: the wings (or fenders if you prefer) are off another project & we fitted them so that they could be processed with the shell - after the paint was stripped the wings were removed for the galv spray treatment to ensure that the whole area of the inner wing was treated properly.

Quick update: bodyshell collected & now going through a minor rework of the bits that Marc was not happy with. Promised to get it back before the end of next week, so hopefully I'll be able to post some photos of the panel fitting and paint preparation before me and Marc disappear for our annual skiing break in Feb.

Shell has been re-prepared and will be refinished over the weekend for promised delivery on Tuesday. We live in hope!

Better late than never: the 9m11RS shell was delivered back to 9m late this afternoon, passed Marc's quality inspection and is now sat in the shop ready for cleaning and preparation. It's shown here lurking in the corner of Panelcraft on its mobility trolley next to Kermit and the 9m93RS Widebody.

can you elaborate on the PDM30 wiring module? looks interesting for a custom build but introduces complexity esp around the relay's.
