Are you talking about AERO/TEARDROP mirrors or are they the small mirrors that attach to the door frame. If they are AERO/TEARDROP I have the tool to take them apart, or you can make your own. I can post pictures if you like.
There are also several threads on this, search "teardrop mirror" or CLICK HERE

Default taking the head off

Hi,

I could do with the tool for taking the mirror head off, could you post a picture and where you got it from.
I have removed the tear drops on a few cars, but never split the head from the base plate.
My car is being re-painted later in the year and I want to put a new clear seal(oe) between the head and base.

Thanks for your help.

I made the tool as well that compress the springs, that's the whole trick. I didn't take pictures.. I know if I had the mirror in 5 minutes I'll have it all apart but unfortunately hard to explain.

Good luck!

Here is a shot of the tool I made. The top piece can be replaced with washers + spacer, the second piece is not threaded on, it slides up and down, the nut is for compressing the spring and the last nut is welded to the redy rod.
There was a thread on how to do this, it included a few pictures and step by step instructions.

Thanks,

It's a mini spring compressor, I get the idea now take the spring tension away and loosen the fastener and its off the base.

I've read through this article in the past "Teardrop Exposed" and one aspect has always stumped me....the article is very detailed with description and photos for the left side mirror. But the right side mirror is located about 3 to 4 inches further 'aft' and access to the screw at the base seems impossible unless the forward door window is removed.

Any comments appreciated

I replaced mine a couple of years ago with no problems what so ever, can't remember which allen wrenches I used, you may have to cut one a little shorter to fit.

A ball type hex head allen wrench is what you need

What keyword I must use?

The trick is to turn the plug with the spring on it, that is why my tool has the sliding piece with a nut on both ends, the top nut fits into the bottom of the plug so when the spring is compressed you can turn the plug half a turn so it will release.
