Default Tiptronic tries to pull/engage whilst stationary

Hi chaps

I've been doing lots of work on the car recently and everything is coming
along well. However, one thing still niggles:

Occasionally, when the car is idling, it's as if the tiptronic tries to engage.
The symptoms are that the car tries to pull (beyond normal 'creep') and the
revs dip dramatically (very occasionally it will stall), then after about a second
everything returns to normal.

In addition, a lot of the time, if you select reverse, the car tries to pull and
stalls (as I still have my foot on the brake).

It's like the throttle position sensor is telling the ECU I'm applying throttle,
but I've adjusted the TPS twice now and there is 5mm of difference between
the external idle micro-switch switching and the TPS idle micro-switch clicking.

I'm guessing a new TPS is the way to go, especially as the tiptronic ECU was
throwing up an error code for 'load signal' a while back.

Just thought I'd run it past you guys first.

You don't have enough ATF in the gearbox.
I had exactly the same symptoms, checked the fluid level in the transmission and ended up adding 1.5 litres.
The level should be 15mm above the 80deg C mark when hot, engine running, level and in park.
I now have a solid feeling, good shifting tip.

you're kidding. Even after this thread, it still isn't the correct amount?

Am I correct in thinking you topped it up whilst the engine is running? I am now very confused.

You're ATF gauge must be completely filled (well over the top MAX mark) when engine off and stationary then?

I didn't top it up with the engine running. I added, i guess about 200-300ml, removed the fill tube and started the car. I then saw the level drop right down to the lower level as the ATF was pumped into the torque converter.
Turned off the engine and added another 200-300ml, started the engine, did a visual check again and kept repeating until it was 15mm over the mark when hot and running.

It is very confusing because when the engine is off it looks perfectly full.

I jacked my car up enough to crawl under and have a good look. All 4 wheels sat securely on blocks that way it was easy to start it and then look underneath at the gauge. Try it and watch the oil disappear out of the gauge.

Your other alternative would be to drain the Tip, replace the filter and fill up with the recommended 9.5 litres.

Are you using the correct ATF????

Hi Nick

Just popped out to the car. Did the 'Start, stop, fill' method and added quite
a bit I guess 800ml. Took it for a short test run...

Low and behold the problems seem to have gone!

I too notice the smoother up-shift. I also found that if I over-gear the car
slightly by manually selecting 4th at a low speed (with no throttle) it selects
a lot smoother.

I will give it a week and then confirm that this is the solution. If it is, I'll
revise our other post on ATF filling so it's clearer for everyone who follows.

Thanks very much for your help.

Wooohoooo.............glad it's all looking good!

If youre going to revise and clarify the other post it may be worthwhile to add it to the DIY section.

I don't know what ATF you used but i filled my Tip up with Valvoline ATF DX-3.

Yeah, looks like that's definitely got it.

As you suggested, I've submitted a DIY section guide here. If you get a moment have a look
through it and let me know if I've made any errors or omissions.

Thanks very much for your help. Really appreciate it.

The garden hose is a pretty standard size here in the UK.

It has an internal diameter of about 12mm. The receiving connector's external
diameter is about 15mm, which the hose has to stretch over - similar to that
of the 'fast fill' connector.

I'll add the info to the DIY section.
