I am in the middle of my spring maintenance, noticed this wet spot on the transmission . Would like to take it off and add new gasket. What is behind that cover?
Thanks

That is where the lateral diff slave lock mounts on a C4. On a C4 there is a seal behind it that prevents diff fluid from leaking out. Not sure on a C2.

Access door to the kugelflachentechnishen , without the proper factory training and tools ...
I've never seen one without the warning tag hanging from one of the bolts before .

Very good Indy, your German may be perfect, but your answers to my question had me thinking I may have offended you, if that is the case I apologize, but please enlighten me.

I recalled that this had been addressed once before... Here.
That's a cover to a port provided solely to measure dimension of the limited slip - if you have any. (If you don't have LSD on a C2, you can call that cover, 'Bob', for all the good it offers you.)
I'd posit the leak is coming from the above-left (in your picture) output flange seal - not this diamond-shaped cover.
Good Luck!
Indy, your answers give proof to multiculturalism's near-endless nature.

I just replaced the gasket behind this cover on my C4. The C4 has a rubber bellows with a metal compression band pressed into the opening to keep the gear oil from draining out when you remove the slave for engine removal.
The gasket is a rather disappointing thin paper gasket. I think you could use a good gasket maker product to fix this, so long as the bellows is good and will keep the gear oil from leaking down over the gasket maker until you get the cover back in place.
Be prepared in case the bellows is not in place if you remove the cover. if the bellows is missing or torn, you will have the entire contents of trans oil draining through a 1 1/4" diameter hole onto the floor until you replace the cover.

Thanks Altarchsa, mine is a C2 so from what I now understand no bellow, just a gaping hole; I did loosen the cover earlier today and oil started to drip right away. Tomorrow I will drop the front of the car and raise the back to get as much oil as possible towards the front of the tranny, hopefully I can then fix the leak without too much spillage.

I think you're going to lose most of the lube, but I believe that jacking it as high as possible on the right side will save more then tilting it forward. You could go pretty extreme on the side to side tilt.
Since there's probably not ever going to be a need to remove this cover again, I don't think it would be worthwhile to oreder and install a bellows.
Good luck!

crg,
Did you replace the gasket? What was behind the door?
My cover is leaking at the bottom as well and is definitely not the output seal.
My car is a C2 without limited slip.
If you did replace the gasket, where did you source the gasket?
Thanks,
Jim
