another tip problem
I've been having this problem too recently. My car is identical to yours (a C2 '91). Have a read through
here to see if anything works for you.
Mine is still giving problems and, as soon as the rain stops, I'm going to pop out to the garage and take
the passenger seat out to see if the wiring to the tip controller is ok.
If you really need to drive the car (as I do to get to work) then I've heard of a trick you can try:
WARNING: I believe this method prevents the "Reverse lockout" safety feature - So it is absolutely
imperative that reverse is not selected whilst the car is in motion.
With the car stationary and ignition off, put the car in 'Neutral' (rather than 'Park'). Hold footbrake and
handbrake on. Start car. You may now be able to use manual gear selection.
My car has been so inconsistant recently, it is hard to tell if this method works or not. Mine worked for a bit
like this then defaulted back to 'limp' mode.

If you can get access to a Bosch hammer that will tell you where the problem is. If not, start with cleaning the contacts between the throttle valve microswitch pins and the plug. They have a tendency to corrode after a while.
All i did with mine was to clean the metal pins and twist them carefully and slightly off centre to make better contact with the plug........problem solved and an easy thing to check and fix.
There is another microswitch under the accelerator pedal which could cause a problem. Again an easy thing to check and clean.
The throttle position sensor is show on the attached diagram. I took mine
off cleaned the contacts (externally, where the plug connects) but it made
no difference.
Just had a look at the tiptronic control box, but apart from being very dirty,
I couldn't see anything wrong (see pic). Took it for a drive whilst pushing and
pulling on all the cabling, but of course it won't go wrong when you want it to!
