Default 3rd brake light delete

...the "3rd" brake light on these cars ranks among biggest design failures of all times. has anyone done a brake delete?? did a search on the forum - came up dry, surely am not the only one that thinks these are ugly?

Just take it off.

You will have to have the engine cover welded and repainted to hide the left over holes.

You don't like the ET head poking out of the back of your 911 ?

At least you don't have coupe. Then you would have to replace the rear windshield. Don't believe that I've ever seen a solution to getting rid of the black square where the brake light is mounted. Anyone done it?

I agree, the ET light looks idiotic, a complete afterthought that ruins the lines of the car. I have been looking for an alternative but so far came up with nothing. I did purchase the 993 basket handle spoiler, but I am not sure I like that look either. I have ET off right now but I am concerned that I "modified" a piece of safety equipment. I saw a picture a while back of a 964 cab with a low profile brake light similar to that on a toyota celica hatchback (the last model) that looked much better but I can't find this item anywhere...........

thks ....i have spent hrs searching aftermarket brake lights and there does not seem to be anything that would fit & look good.
complete delete is best looking solution, only issue is - ifs appropriate to return car to bonestock, becomes expensive delete-expensive install....god its just so f'cking ugly porsche should have done a factory recall on these things.

not sure how many 964's are around but if an enterprising - handy guy with a design bent came up with a bolt on replacement, say with a small black surround.....would think no owner would be too fussed about the price!!

I agree that the ET look ruins the AR lines.

i searched the forum again under different parameters....and this came up. seems overall best solution at least for a cab - actually looks kind of foxy ( personal opinion!!) and perhaps most economic considering "rubber plug set" does not look all that bad....lightbar/spoiler off a 993 & rubber plug. if they re-intro inspections here 3rd brakelight will be an issue.

Get rid of ET and put in the brake light mod that adds them to the rear centre section....

still would not be legal. It needs to be above the other brake lights. I like ET

Jim is correct, from MVSS 108:

"S5.3.1.8 (a) Each high-mounted stop lamp installed in or on a
vehicle subject to S5.1.1.27(a) shall be located as follows:
(1) With its center at any place on the vertical centerline of the
vehicle, including the glazing, as the vehicle is viewed from the rear.
(2) If the lamp is mounted below the rear window, no portion of the
lens shall be lower than 6 inches below the rear window on convertibles,
or 3 inches on other passenger cars.
(3) If the lamp is mounted inside the vehicle, means shall be
provided to minimize reflections from the light of the lamp upon the
rear window glazing that might be visible to the driver when viewed
directly, or indirectly in the rearview mirror.
(b) The high-mounted stop lamps installed in or on a vehicle subject
to S5.1.1.27(b) shall be located at the same height, with one vertical
edge of each lamp on the vertical edge of the body section nearest the
vertical centerline."

There is much more in the standard..............

Mark, i like the looks of the "basket" style from 993, per the above picture from an earlier forum.

with spoiler open is the 3rd brakelight visible on 964??

The 993 and 964 spoiler and rear setup are not a million miles apart. Backdating a legal lighting set up should be legal. At least legal enough to convince a cop or inspection station.

In addition, do Ilko's taillight mod and you will be safe AND legal.
