Default What are your favorite tires

I need to replace my tires. I have really liked my Michelin PS2s. Someone mentioned Bridgestone RE 50 A Pole Positions and I am curious what others think of these tires and if any other are recommended. I have a 1994 cab with 205/50/17 Front and 255/40/17 Rears. I am adding Bilstein PSS 10 coilovers.

Thanks,
Scott

Thumbs up

Hi Scott, I have the Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position tyres on my 964 C4. They are a great tyre on a dry road also very quiet. I just arrived home from a 2 hour drive from Melbourne in pouring rain, there was a fair bit of water on the road and although these tyres are specified as more of a dry road tyre I found them to be good in the wet also. These tyres also seem to be well made as there are only small balancing weights on my rims. I have been running these tyres for about 4 months and the tread seems to be wearing quite well so far, I average 500Km per week on mainly open country roads. My tyre fitter who is experienced with Porsche tells me my next set of tyres should be the Toyo Proxes T1R. He tells me that an N rated tyre is very expensive just because of its N rating. How often do you travel at a velocity of 250 Km/H? Good luck with your choice. Dont let your tyre fitter near your P car with a rattle gun, ask him to use a torque wrench on the wheel nuts. Frank

Yokohama´s are my favorite but I will probably use Toyo, Sumitomo or Hankook next time because they have a better cost/benefit ratio

Here in Argentina a rear tire (255/40x17) from a top brand costs more than 600 U$S dollars each and they are currently unavailable here because importation of foreign "luxury items" tires is blocked

I am really looking forward to trying the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec Tires.

Everything I have read has given them good reviews especially if cost is a consideration.

Well let me give you my two cents worth. I just had my 1990 C4 fitted with the Bridgestone RE50A Pole Positions and love them. Good on the wet and dry and very nice into the corners. I have also found them to be very quiet as well.
Take a look on Tire Rack, they have a lot of reviews and customer comments which really helped me out with the process. Besides looking for the car, shopping for tires can be quite the adventure.

Good luck with the hunt

There has been at least two other discussions this week on Bridgestone vs. Michelin.

The search button is your friend.....

Call me if I can help.

Hands down Michelin PS2's for street use. the Good year F1's are also good but I still like the Michelin's better.Pirelli, Dunlops, Conti's and Goodrich I was not happy with at all especially the Rossos suck royally IMO.

BTW i have a set of 500 mile used Pirelli Rosso's in 225/265 x 18 for sale for $650+ shipping about 50% off, if anyone is interested?

'92 C2 was purchased with Bridgestone SO-2 and replaced with Michelin Pilot Sport 2"s. Wear ratio between front and rear was 2 season with front vs. 1 season with rear. After 4 years changed to Yokohama Advan Sport. Managed to double the life span on both the front and rear and am now looking for a set of rears, as front still has over 1/2 the tread left. Now installed a set of Sumito's and too early to tell any results. Average Milage/ year = 10,000km 17" on Turbo Twist Rims front/rear. Michelin were great dry weather tires, but soft and wear factor was high. Yokohama great in rain or dry, developed road noise as rears became well worn. If I had to choose between the two. Yokohama Advan Sport gets my vote or .02 worth.

I could care less if i sell them, i have so many sets as it is. These are on a set of speedlines i purchased and use for Concours only. Probably more of a hassel to sell than it is worth to me and then I would need to buy new tires for concours events.

You never know if someone is looking for cheap tires although i am sure I got my point across on how much I dislike them by selling a practically new set for half off.

If someone bites all the better.

I have heard good things about the Advans. You feel they have better wet grip than the PS2's? From what I have heard from others, they were a bit lacking in the wet but had good dry grip. The PS-2's have some of the best wet grip of any tire I have driven and I agree they do have a soft sidewall but so long as you don't go over sized in tire width they are fine. The Pirelli have way too hard a sidewall and they do have better turn in but that is all they offer. The softer sidewall is a plus when running 18's especially expensive speedlines. less chance of damaging rims, less harsh ride and low noise. For street i use this is what i look for along with all around performance. I never consider wear when buying performance tires. i usually use 2 rears to one front on a 911 unless it is the track car and then it is more like 2 fronts to 1 1/2 rears in R compound.

The Yokos I use in my car and recommend to others are the Advan Sport, great tire but as expensive as a Michelin or Bridgestone

Thanks everyone. I forgot about the search function and checking with this question. There seems to be many different opinions, but the most common denominator is that PS2s are pretty much the standard, but expensive.

Are 225/45-17s that much better on the fronts? I take it there is no rub?
