Default 964 gearing different from 993?

How different is the driving feel (USA cars) of stock 964c2 gearing versus 993c2 gearing?
Besides the 6th gear 'overdrive' , are they very much the same?
I ask b/c 993 cars seem geared too high and changing the gearing is a big upgrade.
Is this true of 964 cars as well?

The 964 gearing is similar to that of 1-5 in a 993. 964s have 2 ring and pinion ratios over the years, 3.44 (G50/03) and 3.33 (G50/05) with the latter being longer. Yes, both the 993 and 964 responds well to shorter gearing.

Out of curiousity, what issues would then suffer (given 5th was left alone)?

These cars were probably appropriately geared for high-speed travel on open European highways / Autobahns. This doesn't suit our very low road speeds in the US (unless you drive in Atlanta.... ).

here's a chart that allows you to compare 964 and 993 gear ratios, all have been normalized for the same rpm and rear tire

Didn't most of the Euro cars (except Switzerland) get a closer ratio box?

Really? That's interesting - can anyone else confirm? I love a nice close ratio.

ChaseN --- I notice you have an E30 M3... ? Let's see some photos! I am an E30 M3 owner too

Swiss cars have taller gearing. Study Bill's chart. He's augmented and amended.
Rather easy to pull information from it. A good resource to be bookmarked.

Unfortunately I can't see the chart. Thanks to bandwith/firewalls/etc. a lot of pictures and dont come through in Iraq unless they are uploaded as attachments. I knew the Swiss cars had taller gearing, thats why I said the Euro cars except Switzerland. So can anybody confirm or deny that the Euro cars (except Schweiz) have shorter gearing than US cars?

Looking through Adrian's book, the G50/03 was shared with both USA and ROW up
until '92. From '92 on, USA received the G50/05. The ROW received the G50/10.
Again from Adrian's book, differences between the two - /05 vs. /10 are:
taller 1st and 2nd with the /10 vs. /05. The /05 has a 3.33 final and the /10 3.44

Bill or Geoffrey are the better knowledge in this regard. Hopefully, one or the other can tidy up any differences. :-)

From Bill's chart: Speed in gears @ 6800

/05 /10
------ --------
42 45
71 75
104 101
135 131
169 164

Ok thanks, that helps a lot. It seems I was wrong aobut the ROW getting a closer-ratio box - the difference there looks almost negligible. Is there anyone that may be able to upload the chart as an attachment to this thread, or email it to me?

Thanks
