tpc supercharger
Who has first hand exp with this unit. I was and am thinking about getting one installed and was wondering is it a world of difference? I always would love more power..

i've visited the shop and was impressed with the product and the workmanship - didn't make the jump as yet to install. would be interested in observations as to impact of install on durability/reliability etc.

I have one, the car pulls like a diesel truck. Very noticeable difference. Real usable torque starts at 1200RPM. The downside is that it fizzles out by about 5500RPM and from there on is all motor. You drive the car differently with it, you don't need to wait to hit 6K+ RPM to upshift. Lots of power and I'm very happy with it.
As far as longevity, The supercharger's been on the car for 14,000 miles. I have no issues to report. The oil reports are good, oil usage is minimal (1,800-2,000 miles of driving before adding a quart). I track the car as well, and oil temp has stayed below the 10 o'clock range. But as I said, I upshift sooner, because the real torque is in the mid-RPM range. Mine's not intercooled.
YMMV.

ilko were you burning oil before too? I don't burn oil now and don't want to start. By the way who did your install? I forgot the shop now but a place in NJ wanted 10k for install and the kit.

Also Ilko - do you think its possible to DIY install the kit ? Have any problems with the install ? I'm planning on pickup a TPC SC up this xmas. I was thinking I could start the install and get the garage to do the fine tuning.

The supercharger was installed by the previous owner. The cost of installation on the receipt I have was $1300 flat. That's in 2002 dollars
As far as I know the car wasn't using much oil then, it certainly isn't using much now.
DIY install is possible, TPC has pretty detailed info on their web site. But at the end it depends on how comfortable you are with the wrench.

I think there might be a couple more people here. But keep in mind it's a relatively expensive upgrade. A couple of guys on the 993 forum have them as well, you can ask there also.

There is a thread on the 993 board that I started when looking at a 97 Targa in FL chich I ended up passing on after the PPI. When talking to the shop that did the PPI (Vortex in Tampa) he told me that this mod was best performed by a shop that has done it. This car seemed to be a backyard install and it showed.
Everyone one there seems to like the SC set-up. You could go to the TPC website and download the installation uide. It gives the preocess but not much else.

I tried to look at the install instructions and says I am not authorized? No idea. I have to call them. I found a shop that has installed a few of them in NJ, but more concerned on reliability and if I will have more maint expense etc or damages.

Some more info here. Looks like it requires blower and compressor to be removed. No heat or A/C !
FWIW - I used to work a couple of miles from TPC. More of a Race shop than repairs to me on my first visit, but seemed very knowlegable and helpful. Still, when my '02 Turbo started having CELs, I took it to them for analysis. They said it was a/some air injection component that would need abt $350.00 in parts, and require the engine to be lowered (not removed) to access the components. Cost total would have been well over $1K...
Further investion revealed the engine does NOT have to be lowered to access these parts. Turns out the problem was the flimsy Factory BOVs - a known cause of the codes I got. I replaced both valves myself for abt 300 bucks.
I never went back to TPC - nor will I. Your mileage however may vary...
