Default running costs?

So, i posted a question like this awhile ago and would love a follow-up. What should one expect for average annual running costs on a well maintained 964? I am not looking for track use so that level of expense should not be expected. just average daily use expenses on an annual basis. Most likely for a coupe not cab.

Thanks,
Brent

It will all depend on how many miles you put on it a year... but budget around 2-3K per year... if used daily and around 10-15K miles...

Oil change
Brake fluid flush
Valve adjustments
Sparkplugs, Rotors, Caps
Filters (Oil, Air, Fuel)
Brake pads
Wiper blades
Set of tires

Let me see... and I hate going back to looking at receipts..

Maintenance items

Fuel, air, oil filters, sparkplugs (12) - 90.00
Wipers (2) - 18.00
Dist Rotors (2), Dist Caps (2) - 160.00
Oil (12 qts) - 110.00
Valve cover gaskets, nuts and bolts - 65.00
Misc washers - 10.00
Depending on brand... Front/Rear brake pads - 200.00
Decent brake fluid - 20.00
Alignment - 230.00
Fresh set of tires... everyone have a brand they like...

On the labor, have to decide if you want to do the work or paid someone else to do it...

DIY, a good year: $200
a very bad year: $10,000+

(I've never had a very bad year. But I could swing it, if... [knocking wood like Tommy Lang on the drums] it ever came to pass.)

Then you have the normal stuff you need to replace due to these cars being 15-20 years old..

Suspension, Oil lines, plug wires, coils, relays, etc...

You did say WELL MAINTAINED car...

Lonnie, a good year with only 200.00?? That is very low miles in that year and just an oil change, right? Or was the the year you went to work to another country and that was the $ you paid on the electrical bill for keeping the car on the battery tender?

for a $10K year I would assume an engine rebuild? There is no way I could do a 10K year - the car would have to be parked for awhile. This will be a second car and I am looking for something that does not cost more than my current daily driver (1995 Range Rover classic) to maintain. $1-2K a year is doable, 4,5,6 is not. I already have a 1500 - 3000 a year bill with my classic. Are late 80s models much different in cost?

lets see
new fan and bearing $500
tune up kit $189 (first time in 6 years)
oil and filter $80
Fan Belts $20

My usual expense yearly runs maybe $400 or so. The fan delaminated so had to replace it this year.

Yeah, that is if the car had some sort of engine failure...

Like I said, you really are looking at 1-3K depending on usage... I tried to list the common maintenance items.

You never how much it is going to cost a year. No matter what you are always going to change the oil at least once a year if not twice if you store it. My first year of ownership has had new fuel pump, brake caliper rebuild, engine mounts, four new tires, 2 oil changes, new dist. belt, and dme relay replace. All of this comes to around $1600, not to bad. There are always projects to do with a car like this, so keep that in mind. If you buy a nice example that should outweigh some of the initial maintenance costs.

been spending about 3k a year maint, DE adds a bit, upgrades, preventive work. as streetfighter says i did a lot of work just because i didn't have the maintenance history of the car. if you cant or dont do your own work ...
more for sure. i enjoy every min of it, well almost but its made me a better person lol.

So, should I expect less on an annual basis for a late 80s 3.2? I do prefer the 964 lines better.

I plan to have one major expenditure on the car each year. Last year it was putting Recaro PP seats in to make the car more track focussed. But somehow I also managed to add a harness guide bar, cup pipe, engine mounts and some rust on the body fixed.

This year my main project was to have the suspension replaced with KW variant 3 which was done early on. However I've also spent money on dizzy caps/rotors, engine carrier brace, valve covers, most of the engine tins, brake pads and a DIY service (plugs, oil, filters).

If you just drive it and hand it in to a garage for annual servicing I would agree that $2K a year will probably cover it. If you start looking underneath and want to improve the car then it's best not to add up the costs and just enjoy the results
