Thanks 911Jetta - My wife and I recently moved to Nashville from Chapell Hill. I may have seen your car there before. I remember seeing a very nice grey 911 964 drive by while I was playing golf at Finley.

The bumper got hit so I had to replace it; i took advantage of the repair and replaced the lenses and seals while I was in there. The top motor went and the CCU was flaky but not broken - so I knew about that. I did about $1.5k of elective stuff...

Sorry you're no longer in Chapel Thrill...

I also saw a nice dark colored 964 tearing it up on old Farrington down by Jordan lake one day when I was flyfishing. I think it was at the intersection with MAssey Chpl by the two ponds. That you too?

Looked through all my records for the five years I've owned the car: total for repairs and maintenance = $5,386.50, includes replacing the steering rack, a 60,000 mile service including valve adjustment, new rear axle CV boots, slave cylinder, rear tires, new stereo and speakers, various switches, brakes and rotors, fluids, etc. Average: $1,077.30. I've replaced the windshield, too, but it ($800+) was covered 100% by insurance.

Okay. all you guys have convinced me of a few things:
1. That I really love these cares
2. Know everything I can about the car before I buy
3. Expect 1-2K a year on average (meaning some less and a few a good bit more)
4. It is possible to safely keep my kids in the car
Now, any chance any of you out there are looking at letting one of your well sorted cars go? Seems to me miles on the car are less important than how well it was cared for.
Thanks for all the great info and advice. I hope to get one (if my wife comes around) sometime in the next year. Let the search begin!

Best not tell this to your wife but it's quite easy to condense a year of searching into a couple of months when you've decided you're going to buy a 964

Once I decided to pull the trigger, it took 4 months of fairly concentrated effort. I did go through 3 PPI's before locating the car for me. It was 3 states over, so the flight in and the return 900 mile drive (12 hours), helped me bond with the car quickly. I have had all manner of 911's over the years, and I can say that the 964 truly captures all that is great with the various 911 variants. A little old school, a little modern, and utterly capable of meeting your desired level of performance requirements. So much flexibility!!!
Enjoy the journey, and don't become impatient. This board is an enormous resource and should be used as such. All the best, and Good Luck

So, I got copies of some receipts. The owner (third owner) has nothing from the previous owners. He has a lot of work done to the car and has receipts for an engine rebuild including new valve guides and gaskets totalling $5300, engine work again and rebuild the oil cooler and blower? for another $10K (can't really read the writing on the receipts). So, I have receipts for nearly $15K worth of engine / oil / trany work. Assuming the work was good that should really help with confidence, right? Or should I be concerned about a lemon?
He did say that the carfax was clean (I will validate for myself) and showed one outstanding recall - something to do with the steering. Anyone have a clue what that could be and if so, does Porsche still honor old recalls?

here is the summary of what I can make out on the receipts:
1. 6-16-06 New oil lines and cooler tank - $521.15
2. 6-23-06 guides, gaskets, main seals (is this top end rebuild?) $5291.95
3. 10-17-06 Looks like removal of body panels to access the thermostat, oil lines and oil cooler for repair / replacement. Also replace a blown blower motor and rebuild idle valve? $6268 (seems like a lot of $ for this?)
4. 10-18-06 Looks like more engine work related to cylinders (shouldn't this have been dealt with in step one above?). Removal and refit of engine and transmission, Something was done with cylinders 1,2 and 3 then cleaned them? Then test timing on 4,5 and 6? repaired power steering and replaced the fuel pump. $3112.89
