I have a Becker Mexico Pro 4627 head unit, with a small Clarion active subwoofer behind one of the front seats to provide some nice bass (but not too much) and the origional speakers which amazingly still sound nice and crisp after all this time. I also have my iPod connected to it which is much better than taking loads of CD's everywhere I go and is something I'd say is a must if anyone is looking to replace their car stereo.
I chose the Becker unit because it's very understated in the way it looks - no flashy LEDS or stuff like that, and the fact it was also the factory fitted unit in newer 911s, Ferrari's, Lambo's, Maseratis etc!
On top of this, I also have a lovely flat-6 with a cat bypass and a cup pipe to add to the orchestra!

I haven't read all the responses, but I can assure you/confirm that the "stereo" in my Mk1 GT3 is the worst I have ever experienced. It is worse in fact than the stereo in an old 1999 Freelander I used to drive.
Mind you, you would need quiote a good system to hear it in a GT3......^^

Hey Ped et al - Thanks for all the pics - much appreciated. The JVC does look really nice, too. I wonder what the quality is like. I do like the look of the Nak decks. I find they look very close to original - understated and old school and the sound is very good but I am just concerned about service especially with the fact that the Cds tend to jam after awhile. I want to see next if Becker offers something with an Ipod connection that still has the old school look with great sound. I'll let you know what I find out.

Kenwood head unit. ‘Custom’ read deck speakers with slotted and cross drilled woofers. I think there are speakers in the door too.
I am kicking myself for leaving a Blaupunkt head unit, Blaupunkt 10 CD Changer, and Blaupunkt 400 watt 5 channel amp in my last car when I sold it.

Becker Mexico Pro. Infinity speakers front & rear that fitted under the original grilles. It's plain look suits the dashboard - very oem imo. Don't think Becker are making the MP anymore iirc.
Here's a bad photo of it :

The Becker Mexico Pro is a very smart looking unit ... nice and understated. I will have to check to see if it is available on this side of the pond. Thanks for the tip and the photo.

Is 5.25 the only speaker that can fit in the door or can a 6.5 go in without serious modification?
I am thinking of a MB Quart or Infinity Perfect component system. Not sure, I have to hear them both.
Any thoughts, i have been out of car audio for a while?

I have a 3-way component speaker system, Focal 165 VR3 installed in the doors. The speakers are: 6.5" woofers, 4" midrange and 1.75" tweeters. The install took a few hours and looks like it was always in place. The speakers are designed for shallow mounting situations like we have in our doors. The sound is very good, much better then prior with the speakers mounted in the rear deck, since there is more of a cavity in the doors to help produce a deeper lower sound then in the rear decks, which actually has very little space.
