Now, as I write this I am thinking to myself that I should have them replace the spark plugs. It’s been 20,000 miles since they were last changed so why not? What do you think or is it not needed? Would it cost less to do this when the engine is out of the car? Is there anything else I should change that would be cheaper while the engine and trans are out?
Again, thanks for asking and the help.
Peter
Thanks for asking: I brought it in to a shop about a month ago, the noise basically disappeared and the shop couldn't find what it was. The noise then changed from the high pitched to an ugly grind.
I brought it back to the same shop last week and they said it’s in the gear box, a $2,000 to $8,000 repair depending on what they find inside. By the way this is a great independent shop. Then I brought it to a dealership that I often use and they said it’s either in the gear box or the front part of the 4 wheel drive system (transverse case?) I don't remember what they said exactly. I got a call last Friday and they said it was one barring in the latter. Priced to fix between 2,000 and 3,000. So I am also having them replace a leaking gasket (forgot what that one is called) at the front of the engine and do a valve adjust since the engine is already out of the car.
