The USA price is roughly 7k for the MoTeC installed. The cams are another $995 + installation and that will vary with what else needs to be done. In most cases, you'd do the cams when you need a top end which is 20 hours labor + machining the heads, new valve springs, retainers, valve job, and possibly new valves.

My mechanic has a chip that will give me 288 bhp on my standard C2. However, he says that it will reduce my fuel economy by 2 km/l (don't know what it is in mpg, but probably around 25%). I had my BMW 540i chipped a couple of years ago and it increased my fuel economy by 33% ! Why the significant difference?

"I had my BMW 540i chipped a couple of years ago and it increased my fuel economy by 33%"

Please! Batteries low in the calculator? MPG (or MPL) went from 15 to 20
(or 3.75 to 5.00), hardly! Then the BMW marketing guys would have had
a very very simple way to make a modification to comply with mileage
standards or do one better than the competition. Most likely someone
stopped wearing those old "lead" shoes after the mod.

Bottom line: It doesn't happen!

When changing the chip, almost all cars experience a significant increase in the fuel economy. Why isn't that the case with a 964?

Oh no, not again. Please, do us all a favour and start another thread on "Motronic remapping for fuel economy" before its too late......

Hey, I may be a motronic moron , but on all the cars I have owned (and chipped), I have experienced much better fuel economy as well as a significant increase in torque and output. This is my first Porsche, and I cannot fathom why the fuel economy will go the other way?
And yes, I also like to have my cake and eat it as well...

I have read many threads that if you reprogram a Saab 9-3, it will get better mpg. However I am not sure if it is significant. Also these are turbo cars.

To get back on track, when installing 9M Motec, has there been any research done on the effect of different exhaust systems, i.e. GHL, Fabspeed, B&B compared to the stock system, which works better?

Yes, a good set of headers will make gains on a stock 964 or 964RS engine on Motec, the best can lift the top end power by 10hp, however the average is around 5 and on some we measured losses. The set that made the most gains throughout the rpm range were our own design. I'll post a dyno plot to verify this statement later.

Lars,
Please don't take all our comments too seriously. As a relative newcomer what you won't know yet is that there are some very "opinionated" Motronic experts on Rennlist who - how can I put this? - who let's just say are less than tactful in getting their point across. If you wish to be "educated", do a search on 964 9m Motec conversions and read all the threads you find.

With respect to your fuel efficiency comment, I would think that a 10% improvement is possible if you combine the remapping with a corresponding 10% improvement in Volumetric Efficiency, like you would achieve by fitting an air flow meter bypass on the intake and removed the cat from the exhaust.
