Default Best extra BHP mods

Im sure this has been discussed before, but I want to get more power from the car, is there a chosen route with out taking the engine out, stripping and spending a fortune?
I have a 90 C2 alloy inlets....
No cat, cup pipe, open filter.
Cars done 90k miles and was dynoed at 256 hp, the engine seems strong and has had lots of new bits.
I have an Accell chip that I was recommended , not fitted yet, bought it a while ago...
So what to do.... do the alloy inlets need to go, and do a I get a motec conversion , the chap who told me about the Accell is now running 354 hp after a Ninemeister rebuild. what other options are there?

I would like to hit about 320bhp to match my old 964 turbo.
Out of interest what is a 964 with 320 like compared to the turbo.....no lag for sure!!!!

I run a dyno'd 280 with a Ruf chip.

Motec etc your looking at £4k

I looked into all this, but...

now this is my personal thought...

I know my car performance wise is easily going to match an RS.

An RS can lap Donington 6 seconds quicker than me.

I'll improve me instead, its cheaper

However, if anything needed to come out for work, i'd do it then...

Low 964,

Speaking from experience, there is no 'magic bullet' to get you where you want to be other than big dollars.

Probably the quickest and easiest route over 300hp is a supercharger. I have heard they can make very good power, but I am uncertain about wear and tear, etc. Which, of course, is the other side of the equation; do you want a lot of power, damn the consequences, or do you want a lot of power WITH longevity and reliability?

Without removing the engine, and barring the supercharger idea, probaly MOTEC is your next best bet, then MAF/Chipset after that. Without work to the internals, my guess is that you will not see much beyond 300hp either way (Colin at 9M seems like the man on your side of the pond to discuss such things, especially MOTEC).

In the end, my best advice is that you WILL get what you pay for.

Regards,

Dave

Superchargers for 964's are overpriced it seems, for the 10k you pay for the kit, I wonder how much more you would spend on a 993 tt swap?

Rather than change for an aftermarket chip I would suggest a trip to 9m for their remap service on the dyno so it's tailored to your car.

From where you are now, your options with the stock engine, in order of cost/performance are:
1. Fit Accell chip
2. Live remap of stock ecu; or
3. Mass flow conversion
4. Motec conversion

You could at some stage change the manifolds for the later plastic "RS" version, however we have one customer (TT) who still runs the alloy manifolds on his 3.8 engine with success although the throttle body of his system has been reworked to compensate.

The graph attached shows (from the bottom up):
pink: 9m 1990 964 Trophy Cup car (remapped 3.6)
green: SN 964RS on aftermarket MAF kit
red. BP 964RS on 9m Motec conversion
blue: WN 964 with 9m Motec +1 conversion (fresh 3.6 with 9m Sport cams & ported heads)
Speaks for itself really.

Here is the chart to my 93 with, LWF, cup airbox, stock exhaust except 100 cell cat and magnaflow muffler. The car is quick but HP alone will never give you the feel of your turbo. Torque cannot be obtained with most bolt on mods. Although I am usually as fast as many cars with more HP and Torque so it is not about the engine alone.

Sorry it is not too clear. Considering this was only a small expense to bring RWHP to where BHP started out after this, it starts getting costly so I am happy where I am.
