I suspect that the 993 mounts which are non handed would still fit, as there is only one engine carrier listed for the 993's in PET - 993 115 021 90, with 964 mounts (L/R) are listed for the C2/Cabrio where as 993 375 049 05 are listed for the C4/Cabrio. The 964 engine mount is 964 115 021 90.

I suspect that the earlier C2 993's had the 964 mounts, then the later C4 993's moved to the other mounts. The 993 375 049 engine mount was carried onto the 996's, which is one of the reasons I suspect it is cheaper than the 964 one due to economies of volume production. When the 993 parts are 1/2 the price is does seem to make sense to use them if functionally they are the same!

Mounts for 1/2 the price if we use 993 parts? Time to call and order a set...

Thank you!

Geoffrey, Colin, Bluey -
Thanks for your 993 near-equivalence discussions! Much appreciated.
(Bluey- your points, in particular, gave the ancestry logic I'd hoped was out there.)

I just purchased a used set of WEVO mounts for my 993. They were bought from a guy on RL with 996 GT3. The only difference in the mounts is the length of the M12 bolt. The 996 GT3 bolt is 120mm and the 993 bolt is 100mm. I suspect the longer GT3 bolt is required due to a stouter motor mount on the newer car. Ive just ordered 100mm grade 8 bolts to retrofit onto my 993. If you anyone needs the longer 120mm bolts, let me know I may have a used set you can have.

Thank you to Fred for raising this topic. I just installed a set of the Wevo mounts with the black pillows. WOW.... what a difference from a set of shot factory mounts! I do not miss the thunk- thunk after every joint in the road....it is a totally different car. The only suggestions I can add is to use penetrating oil a couple of days before you do the job and to use the oil on the bolt that holds the exhaust pipe to the secondary muffler. I had to adjust the tail pipe because the engine now sits about 1/2 inch higher than before. You should also order a new set of bolts (2 per side) that hold the mount to the body, mine had a lot of corrosion on the threads.

Default Mounts

You are welcome bpras, I am always willing to spend someone else's money...
Unfortunately, it looks like I'll spend a bit of my own too. It seems that there are a bunch of worn out mounts out there now that we are all checking. I would not have known if mine had not leaked. I guess it's like shocks, you don't know how badly you needed them until you get new ones...
I never knew I would open up a new way to spend your money when I first posted. Thanks to all who offered me factory mounts to get me through my dilemma.
I ordered a carrier reinforcement, so I'll eventually go with WEVO or RS mounts. I'm leaning toward RS mounts unless I am convinced otherwise. RS and WEVO both seem to have their following.

BTW, I checked my 993, it has the exact same part number mounts as my 964. They must be interchangable, but quite a price difference from Porsche... Don't know if C4 or Turbo mounts are stiffer, they use a different number.

So does that mean that 996 mounts would also fit 964's???? Do you think these would work on my car???

That is my reckoning - have not got a set of the 993 part numbered ones yet though myself. I seem to remember someone else earlier in the thread saying he was using them in his 964 race car. The fact the Wevo mounts fit across 964, 993 and 996 means these should - the only problem I could see would be the length of the counting studs being too short/long. We do need definitive proof they work!

When buying parts from Porsche I've always found that if a part has been superceded then they supply you with the newer part e.g. they sell you the newer 993 part number DME relay, not the original part. In my own case when I went in for my new mounts they supplied the 964 parts. If the 993 mounts were a direct replacement (superceded the 964 parts) I would hope that they would have sold me those instead. It might be worth someone contacting Porsche to ask them if the 993 mounts can be used and if not, why not?

Default 993+ mounts vs 964 mounts

One observation on the 993 mounts vs. original 964 mounts is the lack of the steel flange and rubber pad mounted on the stud of the 964 style. When jacking the car up via the engine (no, I'm not starting that discussion), my 964 mounts compress (or retract) and the weight of the car appears to rest on the flange against the mount. What happens to a 993 style mount if you jack up the rear of the car via the engine case?

Looks like I have the 964 versions, as I have the exact steel plate/flange and rubber dampener that you speak of (6/94 build date).

A lot of the mounts look similar but are actually a little different. Hell, the mounts in my GT3 look pretty close to the old 964 mounts.

I've been watching this thread closely.
I now am certain of only one thing - I need new mounts. Beyond that, it has gotten clear as mud. There appears to be abt five to six different possibilities for fitment - including several 964, 965, and 993 part numbers (not even considering the WEVOs)...

I was hoping for a definitive answer, but none yet. Seems the stock factory replacement for '92 C2 is the most expensive. I'm reluctant to order an alternative w/o more input, for fear of buying something unuseable...

Can't help thinking the factory built different mounts for a reason - I mean they have different parts for even same year C2 vs C4... Gotta be a reason.

I think - unless someone can provide something definitive - I'm going to get the 964 RS mounts. They are a true Factory "option" for my car. I'll find a used Engine carrier, weld on the the Rennline mod - then add it after. I think it's needed - I broke a engine carrier on my old 930 (snappped when I was replacing - wait for it - engine mounts!) - so I believe it IS needed...

Thoughts..?

RS mounts with a reinforced carrier is a safe and good path!
