Default Monoballs don't fit!

I have a bad feeling that I know the answer to this...

For my Bil / H&R Green conversion, I decided to go with the Factory RS upper monoball for the front. I got all the associated pieces ($$$) to do the job:

964 343 018 82 (2) RS MonoBall Supporting Mount
964 343 301 80 (2) RS Rubber Bump Stop
964 333 469 80 (2) RS Plug
964 343 182 81 (2) RS Spacer Sleeve Top
964 343 182 82 (2) RS Spacer Sleeve Bottom
964 343 186 80 (2) RS Sealing Cap
964 343 188 80 (2) RS Clip

Problem is, the shaft doesn't seem to be long enough to go thru the monoball - no way to get the nut on. Am I missing something? Does the monoball (RS) setup require a different shock?

TIA

I have had similar issues but cannot recall the solution. It may have been a different hat setup which allows the shock to sit up higher into the monoball. I've stopped using them and use the ERP plates instead. Parts are easier to obtain and less expensive.

The piston rod of the struts have a reduced diameter section at the top that goes through the top mount, on the standard strut this section is 14mm diameter x 42mm long, on the RS strut it is 14mm x 72mm long. The only way to fit factory RS top mounts is to either run the 964RS or 993RS struts, have the existing damper rods turned or have someone like KW make you a custom pair of dampers.

You can see it in the top set of pictures on this link. http://www.porsche964.co.uk/technical/rs_suspension.htm
Lower left picture. The green strut is the RS style. Note the longer reduced diameter at the top of the green strut.
I believe the rod is also shorter on the RS strut.

Prices below are what I paid Sunset for 2 of each:

964 343 018 82 (2) RS MonoBall Supporting Mount $631.14
964 343 301 80 (2) RS Rubber Bump Stop N/A Special Order
964 333 469 80 (2) RS Plug $68.66
964 343 182 81 (2) RS Spacer Sleeve Top $30.56
964 343 182 82 (2) RS Spacer Sleeve Bottom $30.56
964 343 186 80 (2) RS Sealing Cap $2.76
964 343 188 80 (2) RS Clip $7.08
Total $770.76
All are new. The mount and "cap" have been painted, the rest are new, in the bag.
I'll sell the "package" for $500.00

Sorry to kick this off again but I'm replacing the shocks in my car and want to make sure I'm 100% clear on the fitment differences, I have read this thread, a couple of others and Adrian's book.

Have I got this right:
My car is fitted with RS mono *****. These mono ***** mean I need both the older style of shorter shocks for the rear (according to Adrian's book) in addition to a longer reduced diameter section (72mm) on the top of the piston rod as mentioned by 9m above?

If so, question is: does Bilstein or KW do an off the shelf fit for these mounts or should I ditch the mono *****, get some aftermarket camber plates and go from there?

I went with the Bilstein 964 RSR shocks on all 4 corners. I don't have the p/n's readily available but if you need them let me know.

I'm running Mode monoball top mounts on all 4 corners.

Cheers, James

Just a cautionary note on the Mode/ER camber plate monoballs

I started having issues w/ them when camber was upped to -3. the nut would interfere w/ the inner mount wall
You can see where it was interfering in this pic, solution use a thinner nut or grind down the existing one.

Thanks for the reply.

Do the RSRs have adjustable rebound and damper?

I bought the car with Cups in it right now, the ones with the 44mm pistons. I'm not sure what the spring rates are but there's not enough droop and rebound is too aggressive for the road rallying I'll be doing. Hit a bump at 70mph+ and it'll be air borne and in the other lane before you can blink- not a lot of fun.

Anyway, so I'm looking for something that can be adjusted, at least a little bit and work with the RS mono *****.

Bill, Thanks for the heads up, I haven't needed to run that much negative camber for the tires I'm running but good to know.

KiwiSean, The RSR dampers are 44mm pistons but are not externally adjustable. I had my local shop send them in to Bilstein and had them re-valved to the shop's specifications for my application which is road racing. I would imagine you could find someone to do the same for your application as well.

Cheers, James

Yep I had to change my front shocks out for RS items when I ran Porsche mono *****, you can buy just the front set from Kw.. Expensive but mega quality!

Right, thanks all. Seems a shame but such is life. Most after-market bolt ons for these cars are so well supported I will not complain!
