Out of State 964 Question: 1992
Hello all,
I'm considering the purchase of a 1992 964 that is currently registered in another state (currently Florida). The car has never been registered in California. Does anyone know if there are any issues I should consider prior to purchasing car. What will California DMV require to have it registered? Were all 964's from 1992 considered 50 state cars? Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.
Cheers, Chris

The California DMV site has all the info you need, including a calculator to figure the tax and registration costs:

Good luck!

Thanks Kahdmus,
I initially went there (CA DMV), but it doesn't address the 964 in terms of the 1992 version being a 49 or 50 state car. I was hoping someone here on the board has purchased an out of state 964 and could share his/her experience.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

However there are other things to be considered, rust, anything to do with high humidity and possible flooding.

I've bought numerous 964's and had them shipped to CA - just get a smog check, head to the DMV and get it registered. Sometimes you need to get it actually inspected at the DMV if it's not titled - an inspector gets in the car and checks a few things. It was quite funny because one inspector was about 60+ years old, and had to climb into the racing seat through the full cage on my prior 92 C4 race car!!! He just cared that the blinkers worked and the odometer reading - didn't mind the huge oil puddle it was creating while sitting, or the smoke cloud it made upon startup!! I had to pull him by the arms to get him out of the car since he was stuck, which made for a good laugh by all the bystanders waiting in line.

I just relocated to California with a 1990 964. You can get the car smog tested first. Since its a pre-1996 car it qualifies for the fuel system EVAP test. However, we are lucky with our cars in that it should come up on the computer as a "no-test" vehicle. There is no way on the car to pinch the fuel canister breathing hose without removing the left rear tire and opening the access panel. By law, the smog testers cannot remove parts from you car to do this. At the local garage as soon as they looked up my car in their database it said "no-test" for fuel evap.
They will just do an exhaust test at idle and at 2500rpm and then check your gas cap seal.
After your done with smog you go do a verification at the DMV, they just check the VIN, mileage, and confirm the car is what you claim it is, then you go inside the DMV and get it registered.
All the best,
Ricardo
