Default Transmission leak

My tranny has developed a leak on the left side driveshaft cover, I imagine it is a matter of replacing the seal. How big a job is that repair, is it a DIY? If so, what do I need to order and if anyone has the parts #s that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Steen

I just replaced my seal yesterday so I have a few tips.
After loosening the CV bolts and moving the halfshaft out of the way, put the car in 5th gear and loosen the 10 mm bolt holding the splined drive flange.
The old seal is very snug so lever it out with a long screwdriver and a block of wood to act as a fulcrum.
Us a little oil to lube the o.d of the new seal. Place it in the bore and slowly tap it in being careful to keep it moving in equal on all sides.
To set the seal below the bore surface, place the old seal on the new seal and continue to tap it in so that the bore does not get damaged.
Put the drive flange back in and torque it's bolt to 33 ft-lb.
Clean all oil and dirt off of the 10 mm CV bolts and torque to 33 ft-lb.
This job should take 1-1.5 hours.

The part number for that seal should be 999.113.347.40

Hi Paul, I did the same job back in 2008, it is a straight forward job, I did buy a seal puller, see picture, makes the job of removing the seals much easier, and with no damage to the fit. Just for clearification, the torque spec for the halfshaft flange bolt, 1 of 10 x 85 m/m is 32.3 ft/lbs and for the 6 of 8 x 50 m/m bolts that connect the halfshaft to the halfshaft flange is 60 ft/lbs. My memory for that torque spec is a little hazy, but 60 ft/lbs is in the ballpark.

Steen, according to the Bentley manual the torque CV joint bolts to the flange is 33 ft-lb, which lines up with various charts on the internet for the 10 mm coarse thread grade 8.8 bolt. However, Bentley info has been known to not be flawless.....
Nice seal puller.

Ok, just checked some threads over on Pelicanparts and 60 ft-lb was mentioned over there. Damned Bentley manual. Love the title "Without Guesswork"; I might as well be guessing!
Just when I thought I was finished
Steen, nice catch. Thanks for helping me avert a catastrophe.

Paul, you are very welcome. In another thread about the same issue, I think it was either Geoffery Ring or Steve Weiner that mentioned that on some rare occasions those 6 of 8m/m bolts were 10 m/m which makes it even more confusing. Is yours a turbo or n/a ?
I would just like to add, that slate grey turbo of yours, is my absolutely most favorite car, is on my screen saver, I know you had it up for sale a while back, if I would have been able to pull the trigger, it would have been mine; did you sell it?

Thanks for the compliment. Yes, it is a 3.3 Turbo.
I never actually had it up for sale; kind of kicked it around a little bit but I'm in too deep now to turn back now. As of today I feel like the car's finally perfected (will see how long that feeling lasts).
