Will HD struts off a Turbo 964 work on a non turbo C4
#2
I am pretty sure they won't.
If they are HD's are from a 94 turbo definitely no. I believe the C4 was specific to the AWD system and is listed as a different strut than the ones used for the RWD cars.

According to the Pelican site the front struts are the same for all variations of the 964. Details below:
VE3-5277HO-M12 Front Bilstein Strut, Left, 911 Carrera 2/4 (1989-94), 911 Turbo (1991-93), Each $234.75
VE3-5278HO-M12 Front Bilstein Strut, Right, 911 Carrera 2/4 (1989-94), 911 Turbo (1991-93), Each $234.75
AFAIK, the rears are also the same although the Pelican site doesn't seem to confirm that. The Turbo uses the later (post 91) mounts obviously.
The only major difference in the suspension is in the springs used and the wide bodied cars use the outer mountings for the front struts.

Dave

Anthony,
You are correct - but the OEM struts were Boge and the original question was about HD's - I assume meaning Bilstein. Porsche may have chosen to make small changes for the Boge parts - indeed the Turbo units have a 965 part number - but Bilstein apparently chose NOT to make the distinction. As you say, however, the springs ARE different.

Anthony,
I'm assuming you are referring to a Turbo 3.6 since that was the only Turbo produced in 1994. It may well be that the parts are different although, again, I have never seen any different parts quoted by Bilstein as being specific for the Turbo 3.6. I guess the real answer is to identify the Bilstein part numbers rather than make any rash assumptions.

Yes, I had to return the HD struts for the 91 turbo as they will not fit my 94. Apparently something different in the way they mount.

Anthony,
The part number you list as for the '94 Turbo is, in fact, listed by Bilstein as a 993 part. Pelican list THAT part as "911 Turbo 1994-1998" so it might be that Porsche used the 993 strut on the Turbo 3.6. Here's Pelican's listing:
VE3-B648HO-M12
Front Bilstein Strut (Heavy Duty), Left, 911 Carrera 2/4 (1994-98), 911 Turbo (1994-98), Each Brand: Bilstein $391.25
VE3-B649HO-M12
Front Bilstein Strut (Heavy Duty), Right, 911 Carrera 2/4 (1994-98), 911 Turbo (1994-98), Each Brand: Bilstein $391.50
I was certainly not aware that the Turbo 3.6 had substantially different suspension - it's interesting to find that out. I wonder if the regular 964 C2/C4 of 1994 had the same?? The 993, according to PET, had 993.xxx part numbers and they don't appear in any of the 964 models.

Me thinks the main difference between the turbo 3.6 and the turbo 3.3 front strut is the diameter of one or both of the mounting holes. I believe the bolt was increased in size for the 3.6. I have read that RUF recommended just drilling the hole larger to fit a 3.3 strut on the 3.6. Not sure of the issues going the other direction though it should "fit".

"USA Turbo 3.6 models are fitted with revised shock absorbers and reinforced drive shafts. Rear coil springs and trailing arms, first used on the 1992 Turbo 3.3, were used for the USA version of the Turbo 3.6"
This may be why there is some confusion between what is listed in the US and elsewhere, so for a ROW car I'd go with whatever is listed on the Bilstein.de site.
