I used 15W-40 three years ago. After that, i had two years with 10w-40 shell helix and now i use Meguine 10W-60. Significant better oil-pressure (mostly near 2bar when oil is hot (warmer than 90°) at idle).

I am using Mobil 1 V-Twin 20/50 in the 964's. I use regular Mobil 1 in my non-Pcars. I was a diehard user of Mobil 1 but recently disassembled my 964 with 230K miles on it. The cams had pitting. I spoke to my machinist and he said that this was caused by the lack of ZDDP. I have since switched to Mobil 1 V-Twin which has the high ZDDP that the red cap Mobil 1 had. The cost is only about $1 per quart more than the regular Mobil 1. I figure its insurance.

^^^ Sorry you got burned Rob.

Did M1 15W50 have high levels then drop them and then recently raise them again?

Here is the latest factsheet from Mobil

Laker - Yes, they dropped the ZDDP levels for a while 20/50 dropped from 1600ppm to 800ppm. I believe they have 1200ppm now. The V-twin has 1600ppm

2005 ish G5 regulations caused the drop in ZDDP, pretty much across the board except for special applications.

Always interesting when these threads pop back up...

I have been using Redline 5w40 since I got the car, with usually one oil change per year as the car is stored for winter.

This year I will be switching to Redline 15w50 in advance of a US trip, where the car will see warmer temps than usual.

Since this thread has been running for over 4 years since I first posted in it, do I get a re-up??

"What oil?" really is The Eternal Question.

Still Redline 10W-40. Nothing else, ever.

I tried Mobil motorsport 10W-60 because Mobil motorsport 15W-50 is no longer available over here. I got higher pressure but the car ran hotter and it felt, noticeably, sluggish compared to before (it was almost labouring in the higher gears). I then found this article which advises against the use of it in our engines:

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/pdfs/tech-...10w-60-oil.pdf

...same symptoms as I had experienced. So, on their recommendation I dropped it out, put 5W-40 in and the car feels normal again.

I was loyal to Redline for a while with some of the older BMWs I owned. No reason other than what the internets recommended. Now I'm using Brad Penn 20w50 for the new (to me) 964, for the same reason. Will likely stick to it.

Bought some 100% triple ester based oil from Maxima to try out on one of my motorcycles. Maybe I will also try out their Maxima RS 15W50 on my next oil change to see how my 964 runs. I would expect it to be similar to Motul 300V.

Currently running BP 20W50.
