Default 1991 PORSCHE 911 C4 RS LIGHTWEIGHT - Details?

Ray over at RPM Sportscars in Houston has listed a "1991 PORSCHE 911 C4 RS LIGHTWEIGHT" for quite some time. Here is the link: http://www.rpmsportscars.com/door25.htm

The data:
Grand Prix white/black, 450 km, 1 of 20 factory built cars, 959 Paris-Dakar AWD transmission, mechanically variable differential lock controls, D-90 magnesium wheels, Carrera RS seam welded body shell, aluminum body panels, Matter cage, lightweight glass, fire system, 1,100 kg, all factory original, museum quality, never raced, not street legal, chassis # 964004, $ 154,500

I looked it up in Adrian's "Porsche 911 Enthusiast's Companion" and found his write-up on Page 18. It turns out the MSRP was 280,000DM. From what I can tell, the biggest (and I mean biggest) drawback is that the top speed is limited to 120mph b/c of the AWD system...

What do you guys know about this "4-RS" line? It appears to be a Porsche anomoly. As it is so rare, I am also wondering why it has not sold...

Thanks,
-Blake

Maybe because it's a race car without a home? I know that they never raced, they were created without a series to enter, and can't be made street legal. It's an awful lot of money for a car that can't really be driven. Don't get me wrong, if I won the lotto, it would be one of the first to come home. I love that car, always have.

Think of all the other options you have for that kind of cash.

It's a non-street legal race car for $150K with a top speed of 120mph, so I think that would narrow down the pool of potential buyers right there. It seems like something a person would buy mostly for historical value to put in his showcase.

I believe the car in the above mentioned thread (the one Geoffrey saw) is back on the market as well.

I think there were actually 22 built not 20.

The lightweight designation refers to your wallet after purchase.

an incredibally interesting car - i would love to own one (and yes over much of what i could buy for $150k in the porsche market)

The top speed is limited by gearing - nothing else - it orignally was created for Group"B" rally and the Paris-Dakar, etc.
The Rarest of the "Series" 964 cars with only 22 built (next is the 92 cup) althought there are special models that are even rarer (an Aluminum fender and door speedster comes to ming and the GS of course)

This would be a good investment since it is realitively unloved right now

That is what I think Rob. The rarity is very interesting, and i am surprised that it has been for sale at RPM for such a long time without any takers...

It would be in my all-star Porsche collection if I had the funds...

BTW Rob - I met a guy this summer at MMP here in Utah with his "new" US Cup Car with under 5K on the odometer that he bought from Seinfeld. I have him your info regarding the Registry, but he never replied to any of my emails. I can gather his contact info if you are interested. From memory, it was an Andial conversion car in excellent (like new) condition.

I'd buy that car in a heartbeat in I had a spare $150K laying around. How many oportunities does one have to buy one of (a very cool) 22 Porsches that were ever built. What are SC/RS's selling for these days, I'd love to have one of those as well.

If it is a genuine 4RS then it is a bargain. The only one I have seen for sale in Europe in the last 8 months was on at the Euro equivalent of £115,000 and that was when it was 1.45 Euro to the GBP. If genuine, buy it and advertise it in Germany for a major profit. If you need someone to drive it from an European port to it's final owner, I am available at very reasonable rates - beer, food and hotel (in that order)
