Default Aussie supplier - C4 rear sway bar?

Have been looking for the 21mm rear sway bar that Adrian recomends - no luck at the wreckers - does anyone know where there is one or is there a supplier of an aftermarket adjustable bar here in Oz?

Thanks

Hi Michael,

When I need a special part I ring George Cairns in Ferntree Gully. (03) 9758 5610

He may be able to point you in the right direction.

He does a lot of race prep for the Targa Tasmania.

Thanks - two phone calls to make tomorrow - the car is in the garage - up on stands and getting a service and good going over so its ready for another year of graet country driving around the curvy under policed back roads - on the list is:
new windscreen and rubber
new wipers all round
new rear deck lift "shocks"
four new tyres
4 wheel alignement
2 new headlight glasses
stone chip "repairs"
keyless remote
new keys - made to fit the old "worn" lock barrels
cup mirrors (if I can get glass at a reasonable price - have everything else)
front air ducts - to replace fog lights - but will not duct them to brakes
rear sway bar - if I can find one
replace distributor belt
tension power steer belt
adjust valve clearances
new plugs
new spark plug leads (from Canada - about $175 Aus landed!!!)
new filters
oil change
add drain plug to oil cooler (to get that last litre of oil out)
--- and anything else that crops up!

Should take about a month - hopefully.

I can vouch for Chance (even with a name like that)- I think I have subsidised at "least" half the cost of his rebuild and he probably should name his car after me. I will warn you though I have bought all the good stuff from him except when he hid the heater tube bypass on me
He is very fair with prices, freight costs and ships promptly. I am expecting front Bilsteins from him this week.

Hello psychoideas

I'm over in Sale -- just a good six over the hill from you!

I just gave George Cairns a phone call -- he said he will call me back tomorrow -- he says he might have one "lying around".

Otherwise I will enquire with the above Rennlister from the States.

Let you know how I go with George.

Regards

Just buy it from Porsche, I think it cost less than $300 with bushes.
Special order from Germany and I had it in less than 2 weeks.

Thanks -- that answers the question -- if George Cairns doesn't have one (he said he would ring me back tomorrow after he had had a look) I will ring and order one from Porsche Melbourne.

Report regards the search for a sway bar.

George Cairns (or rather one of his sons) advised that they don't have one but he gave me a number for someone that should be able to help additionally he advised that they had had some success with a custom-made bar and that if I could not get the bar I wanted they could perhaps source one although it had been some time since they had purchased one -- additionally they suggested that if I did go to the heavier bar I should do some reinforcement work around the mounts because (in their opinion) the
"hangers" are not strong enough and could break away.

I see on the Performance9 website that they have an adjustable bar for a little under $400 and also I found a 21mm bar at a wreckers in the United States for $90US postage $140US.

Also as mentioned above the original one by another Rennlister the Porsche price is reasonable - I think they said about $330 plus the two rubbers at $40 each.

Additionally was speaking to George about doing a corner balance and an alignment -- he said the corner balance could take up to four hours and the alignment another hour - so there's $600!

Does anybody have any idea what a corner balance should cost in Melbourne?

Thanks for the suggestion re performance 9 I'll give them a call tomorrow.

I was a bit shocked about the cost of a corner balance -- somehow I didn't think it would take 4 hours

Does anybody have any experience about how long a corner balance should take if the car has already been set up to the correct heights?

Thicker sway bars and broken mounts are an issue with pre-964's - never heard of them being an issue with 964's, though. The corner balance must be done prior to alignment, because adjusting the corner heights changes the static positions of the wheels relative to the car and therefore alignment. The balance itself should not take more than an hour or so - you are simply raising/lowering the perches while the car is on the scales. The alignment afterwards can be very time-consuming, though, especially the rear as the toe and camber are inter-related - changing one changes the other.
