Default gasket sealant usage question

Hello all,

1) what is the hard and fast rule for using sealants on gaskets and o-rings?.
For example, I have seen references where people use Curil-T on engine breather gaskets when they replace it, and others recommend dry installation. Another example is the oil return tube o-ring lubrication where some will use Dow Corning 111 and others just use engine oil. Another example Curil-T on the o-rings of the cams and the paper gaskets and D.C 11 on the o-ring on the power steering side of the same cam.

2) What are the aternative to Curil-T, Dow Corning 111, and 3-bond 1211, that you can find at a local automotive part store?.

TIA for all your help. Andy

I do not use gasket sealer on any of the gaskets.

I do use Dow 111 on all rubber and viton seals, it keeps them from being pinched.

Hmm
Asking what kind of sealants to use is like asking a room full of people what the best beer is.

Here is my .02 derived from hundreds of threads on this topic:

Outer Case Halves: Threebond 1104
Bearing Saddle Surfaces: Loctite 574
#8 Bearing (balancer end) O-Ring: Threebond 1211
Case Thru Bolts: Dow Corning 111 on Green Viton O-Rings
Flywheel Seal: Curil-T? (*** Preferred Dry ***)
Balancer Seal: Curil-T
Intermediate Shaft Cover to Case: ThreeBond 1211
Oil Breather Cover to Case: ThreeBond 1211
Cylinders to Case: Curil K-2 or ThreeBond 1211
Cam Towers to Cylinder Heads: Threebond 1104
Cam Chain Housings to Case: Threebond 1104
Cam Chain Housings to Cam Towers: Threebond 1104
Cam Chain Housing Cover to Cam Chain Housing: Threebond 1104
Gaskets: Thin coat of Loctite 574

I believe the threebond 1104 may have been a new number now. Something to do with less lead. You'll have to look into it.

All engines.

The leaking on the 911 engine usually comes from the o-rings due to the engine growth with heat and there isn't much you are going to do about that.

You don't usually see the engines leaking at the solid gasket surfaces like the case halves, cam to case surface, cam to head etc.

"Asking what kind of sealants to use is like asking a room full of people what the best beer is."

That is a great question , I find out about beers I need to give a try .
People come up with names I've never heard of and then I go hunt them out for a tasting .
So , what is the best beer ?

Geoffrey builds race motors that get pulled apart yearly / semi yearly , so I was asking if he was
talking about them or normal street motors . Without asking I would not know if he was talking just the race motor or not , and as he knows whats what in that area , I kinda really wanna know his thoughts .

I follow the Porsche recommendations for sealing as provided for in the street stock service manuals. Nothing more except for the RSR rocker shaft seals and a good quality rebuild gasket kit, not one from Autozone.
