Default How to know if you have a LWF

Is there a way to find out if you have a LWF without opening everything up? I do not have any records on my car and therefore do not know what had been done by PO. The tac drops fairly quickly when the clutch is pressed. Also the car stalls when the ac is on and press the clutch in.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

When standing still, with the engine idling and in neutral, can you hear the gearbox rattling? (Press the clutch and it should stop) If so, you have a LWF fitted. They're also very noisy when you're lugging the engine!

The only way I can think of, is to find someone who does have a LWF in their car, and compare what it feels like when revving the car from idle speed with no load. A DMF is very sluggish to rev, and the LWF will zip up quickly.

My LWF doesn't make any gearbox rattle at idle, unless it's lugged in 2000RPM under load then it will make its slight groan, but otherwise it's nice and quiet...

Garrett,

Which LWF setup are you running?

I use the factory lightweight flywheel (not fidanza or otherwise...)

Garrett,

I thought the gear chatter is usual for the Euro RS's fitted with the euro RS LWT flywheel & clutch. Is this what you have fitted, or do you have the slightly heavier 1989 single mass flywheel fitted to early C4's? The DMF was fitted to later cars to reduce the gear chatter.

The symptoms you describe lead to that conclusion but the sure fire way to tell is to drive a friends car and then drive yours. After a spirited drive in yours look in the rear view mirror at your face. If you see a you definitely have a LWF

How about looking in the inspection window of the transmission belhousing. Using a mirror you can see enough of the pressure plate/clutch assembly to tell.

my suggestion would be to find someone on the board who has a DMF and ask him to count how many seconds it takes the revs to drop from 5KRPM. Then time yours and see if it's marginally quicker

I have the LWF so i'm no help with this

If you can have the car cruising at 4000rpm and press the clutch and not have it stall, or almost stall... you don't have a lightweight flywheel

I have the LWF and definitely hear the "chattering" in neutral at idle. Someone else decribed it as a can of marbles swirling around. That is actually a fairly good description, although its not loud (maybe a muted can of marbles..). I've also noticed a similar sound under load at lower rpms (lugging) as someone else described above.

Look through the transmission bellhousing opening where the flywheel reference sensor is pointed towards. If you have a MWF the starter ring gear will be mounted on the front of the pressure plate. If you have a LWF the starter ring gear will be mounted between the flywheel and pressure plate and it should be shiny (it's aluminum -- under the red arrows in the 1st image). The DMF starter ring gear is also mounted between the flywheel and the pressure plate but it is made of steel so it should be slightly rusted/corroded (2nd & 3rd image). If you shine a flashlight through the left side rear wheel you can see the ring gear without taking anything apart.
