I received my scantool a few days ago and it is a really nice package. I hooked it up to an old IBM laptop runnnig Win 2000 pro and it worked perfectly. Thanks again.

Default Happy Scaqn tool owner

I recieved mine last week and it was promptly shipped, well packaged and in a nice nylon case. Loaded the software on XP, fired it up and it worked like a charm right out of the box! Very nice package and workmanship.

Thanks, Ricardo!

I got Ricardo's package. Very nice. Scantool works great. I downloaded the OBD plot software, but it keeps giving me an error "can't open
COM port". I rebooted to ensure that scantool was not locking up the port. I tried running OBD plot and got the error and then ran scantool which opened up and ran fine on the same port.

Any hints?

What comm port is scantool running on? I've never tried the ODB plot software. I wonder if you can tell it what comm port to open like you can on Scantool. Emailing the author of OBD plot is probably the best way to get the answer.

Ricardo,

Both scantool and OBD plot are set to run on com1. Thanks for your help.

Default Scantool

Many thanks to Ricardo for the scantool package!

Very well presented in its own pouch with disc and cables, etc.

Hooked it all up at the weekend as i was having some hesitation problems and it came up with a couple of fault codes with just one returning after clearing so at least it has narrowed my search down.

I am sure this will be an invaluable tool and its making use of a redundant Toshiba laptop running Win98!!

Samper,

Its been pretty cool to ship units all over the world. I feel more connected to all 964 owners as we strive to keep our cars running strong and on the road. My car is at the alignment shop now and once I get it back I'm finally going to start enjoying driving it hard as all I've done is work on it since the winter ended.

Add my kudos too. Ricardo, this is a product you can be very proud of! Good quality and nice packaging make it a worthwhile investment.
The set-up instructions got mine going right away, and I was able to promptly check and clear some old fault codes. A couple persisted and, using the Scantool, I was able to fix the causes and verify that they didn't come back. I demonstrated it to the guys at my specialist shop and they were very impressed with it, too. (They don't have an OBD1 scanner.)
I also installed and tried the OBD Plot software and it would be an excellent application, except that it kept re-initializing after running for a minute or so. I contacted JulianB, the author, and he said that it is a timeout problem with the interface to the OBD that he hasn't been able to resolve. He is hoping that someone who is familiar with the software engineering of the OBD1 system will help to fix the bug.
Ricardo, are there any detailed instructions for the Scantool interface? For example, what is the purpose of the check boxes beside the readings in the ECU inputs and actual values windows?
Thanks again, Ricardo, it's Rennlisters like you that make this such a great community and resource!

Hambisa, near as I can figure the check box is a toggle between 1) a single snapshot of data (check box empty) or, 2) a continuously refreshed ('streaming') data output (check box marked)

Frankly, I haven't seen the point of the first setting (especially when the engine is running & changing values!) -- so I just keep the boxes checked, and see the latest values.

If it's any consolation, I'm in the same head scratching camp as you over some of the software's more cryptic controls & output. Some points are still quite greek to me.

On other fronts, how goes the C4 since (spring '07) performance driving school?
Memory gets tweaked everytime I see those ("quick"!) front plates, or name!

Elbeee is the resident expert as he is the one doing the most poking around with scantool and posting about it. Other than check and clear trouble codes I have not done much else. There are some monster multipage threads when the software first hit rennlist on the 964 and 993 boards where there are bits and pieces of information. As I figure out more I will add on to Elbeee's scantool thread.

Ricardo,
Bit late to the party here - only found out about the scantool and everything when I met Laurence Gibbs at Silverstone this weekend, searched through loads of threads and ended up here are these units still available?

Hi Bishop,
Ricardo has been sending people who are interested in obtaining a scantool to me since he is presently not making them now. I'm making another batch of them, should be ready by next week.
The scantool is available at $130, shipping included for the US, or $140 to Europe. Paypal at helmetcamera@suddenlink.net

Photo of scantool at http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/scantool.jpg

Software is here http://dedeharter.com/scantool/scantool4.zip

Unit has been tested on my 91 C2. Money back guarantee.

I'lll let you know when units are available.

Thanks, Kevin

Definite interest here. Has anyone run this tool through a MacBook Pro running, say, Windows XP using VMWare Fusion? Any reason it wouldn't work?

Default USB connection

Sorry for the repeat question -
What is the latest recommendation/solution for a cable/adaptor to allow USB connection for the scantool, instead of the serial cable connection? I no longer have a laptop with a serial port.

Thanks to everyone who has supported this project.
