OBD1 Scantool Interface Group Buy (fully assembled)
#136
Hey Gary!
I received the Scantool today! I'm as happy as a kid with it! Thanks for the smooth transaction!
Next step...checking whether my C2 91 returns me with some faultcodes, cause he just isn't willing to start anymore.
Best regards,

I bought one a few years back on the group buy with the 1995 OBDII trapezoid pin connector.
If I can find it in the garage next week I will post it here for sale ...

For those catching up... RicardoD was a hero and he made the original set of these tools. I was lucky to be a beta tester, and to have gotten one. I don't think he has a lot of time right now to be doing more, so there is a finite supply of this particular version.
There WAS at one time a loaner version that was going around by mail. You might search for that, but I haven't heard much about it in a couple of years.

Certainly the package that RicardoD put together was the most convenient, complete and least expensive solution to the ScanTool challenge.
I designed the very first hardware to be used with Doug's software, and if you know of anyone who can fabricate electronics, building one of those may be an option. Copies of my schematic have been floating around here and there for over 5 years.
If you can't find a copy, send me a note and I'll email the schematic to you.

I love that little hookup gizmo.
When you need to see 'inside', nothing comes close to it (Except, of course, a $Hammer$.)
My car even has a little RicardoD shrine set up in the corner of a toolchest drawer... devoted just to him and his device's insightful Powers - "The Shrine of the Holy Signal & Immaculate Connection."

ok- I can brag. Ricardo gave me one for helping him with his suspension swap.
saved me a whole lot of headache when we went to Parade in 2008. Check engine light came on 4 hrs into the drive down, and turned the scantool on to find out my 02 sensor crapped out on me.

Yes, it was a really nice package, including USB cables, and a handy little case. I have it with a dedicated crap-laptop in the tool drawer in the garage. Beyond the schematic, he created a good little plastic case for the interface hardware etc. A really nice job.
Ricardo is in CA on a "new" job, and I don't think he spends much time on here nowadays.

Dear Rennlisters who have contacted me about doing the OBD1 scantool. I apologize for not responding to your emails. It is clear there is still plenty of demand for more units. I don't have any more.
Shortly after I finished the last run in 2008 I relocated to California and have been consumed by "life". Life being work and raising two boys, and moving twice in a year, and don't have time for any of my hobbies. Luckily, my 964 is running great and I take it out for weekend runs in the Santa Cruz mountains near where I now live.
I am trying to figure out how to do another run of units. One problem I have is that my initial design files for the PCB have been lost when I rebuild my computer. However, I still have the gerbers and other files to make more PCBs. Plus I have all the mechanical bits and BOM to make this work again.
The big problem for me is the connectors. I used a machinist friend to make them and he can't do that anymore. I have the precise mechanical drawings for that as well.
The best thing I think is to make this kit "open source" and work with some other Rennlister to make the connectors, and then I can release kits. There is no way I am doing all that work again. The reason people loved my little product so much is because I really put my heart and soul into giving people a useful piece of hardware.
I am not sure if anybody has made any more software progress. But what we currently have, for free, is better than nothing
I'd love to see this as a cable that plugs into the iPhone, iPod Touch, or upcoming iPad. I can dream can't I?
So everyone hang on and hopefully as a community we can make this work again.

I am willing to try and get connectors done.. maybe... Have we looked into doing this with eMachineShop or anybody? I don't have much experience with it, but I am willing to fail until I do...

You can always just plug the wires in individually. Its not hard to do.
This is a temporary plug I made before I got the group buy one.
