I have generally been a lurker since the 911 964 I purchased last June has been in the shop since last September. I brought it in to fix a "minor" oil leak for $1,700 which lead to a total engine rebuild.
While the car was apart... why not ... replace the clutch & fly wheel, guide tube, shocks (Bilstien) & springs (H&R), oil lines & oil cooler, starter, altenator, fan, hvac control unit, rear tail lights & deflector, motor mounts, drop links, oil thermostat, rotors, pads, sensors, fog lights, brake cables, door handles, shifter ****, pedals, turn signal stalk, fuel neck, door sill trims, targa seals, reconditioned targa top, clutch pedal assembly, seat switches, shift ****, corner balance & alignment, 993 wheels, strut bar, new trunk carpet, mats, paintless dent removal with paint restoration, hood shocks, new keys, cadium plating of all parts not replaced, painting of the undercarriage & wheel wells. This is all I can remember off the top of my head. I'm sure there was much more. Needless to say, the restoration cost more than I paid for the car. Live & learn.
These are some pictures of the restoration. I have more and I have to take more of the finished product & post them. http://picasaweb.google.com/Liqcaresq/Porsche911964

You are my equal from the 964 camp. Although your efforts surpass mine, I'm quickly closing the gap.
It's a constant source of puzzlement for my wife - she was under the impression that I purchased a very clean, original 993 in '05.....
Case in point:

Love that burgendy interior. I completely support your irrational decision making. You should read the Gold Plated Porsche by Wilkinson, which is the bible for this type of thinking.

You built yourself a new car!!! That's wonderfully cool.
Ricardo, The Gold Plated Porsche is a great book. Really a fun read and technically interesting to boot. One of the things I liked best was that he went into his Porsche rebuild with pretty reasonable expectations. He expected to spend 10's of thousands. And good for him, he did!![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)

Hey Ken,
I met you at the Concours back in May - I too have the White 964...
IMO, If you have the $$ (!) I think you should complete the job by replacing/refurbishing the seats/carpeting. I think with that, you'd feel like you were riding in the new car that you have built.

Thanks for all the comments. This forum is very funny, I guess you need a good sense of humor to own one of these cars.
When I purchased my 911, my intention was to use it as my second car to drive to work on nice days. I now have "invested" more than $50k in the car. See what I mean about having a sense of humor.
My problem now is that the car is too nice to drive & park at my job. I have a garage queen already, a 2003 M3 Convert with 8,300 miles on it, and a suv I use as a daily driver.
Assuming my wife does not smother me in my sleep, I am thinking of selling my 911 and M3 and purchasing a 2003-05 911tt convertible or an M6 convert. I am not sure at this point. Any comments?

all that and you forgot to paint the fan?
Nice job on the restoration. I'd like to do the same in about 20 yrs, once my kids are out of high school and I can spend their college money
