Air Cooled HKG

In the market for a decent 964. On the last two vehicle inspections, a '91 and '93, I have found a piece of OLD plywood beneath the carpets, right behind the driver's pedals. It is made to measure and screwed into place. It is not in an area of rust or appear to replace any damaged panels. Having now seen it twice I must ask the question.....who would make such a modification? Surely Porsche would not have been using timber in the construction of their vehicles at the end of the 1980's. Anyone have the answer?

look at any pre 964 also and its the same. You can buy fiberglass replacements but wood has worked fine for all these years!

As others have said, it's the Porsche factory piece. If you don't like it, you can buy a beautiful powder-coated metal replacement from Rennline.

They used them up through 1998 in the 993 series, real character I guess!
I've often wondered when the last other car company besides Porsche quit using a piece of wood as part of the construction of one of their cars.

I remember seeing them a few years ago but dont remember who sold them. Performance Products has the Aluminum.

Lots of top class car manufacturers still use wood and the customers specify it - on the dash etc

The Morgan car has always been built around an ash-frame , and a steel chassis. The new Aero 8 also has an ash frame. This gives unique strength, flexibility and surprisingly, research showed that the frame made the car safer on impact tests.
