C4 4WD control
Hi all,
I am new here so thanks for having me. Picked up my 2st 911 last week... a 1992 C4! I just love it....
Quick question.... what is the little dial beside the spolier up/down control for? I am guessing it's to do with the 4WD system given the little picture beside it, but can someone tell me exactly how to use it? Also, on roughish road sometimes a little LED light comes on just above it... it this some sort of traction control kicking in??
Thanks a million,
Adrian

Don't use that dial. It locks the awd for getting out of mud/snow. And yes thats the awd computer kicken in making sure you stay in control. Pretty advanced for 90's. Have fun with ur car. I do in my dads 1990 C4 cab

Turn the dial when stopped to lock the diffs. This helps you get moving in snow etc. Once you're going about 15-20mph they'll automatically un-lock. You'll notice that the cars' a little harder to steer when the diffs are locked.
The orange light comes on to show the traction control is working and is normal, especially on rough roads.

Hi Adrian,
It must be the season for buying C4's, I just bought a C4 cab 1990.
The **** is for the diff lock when you are in snow or sand, it is called a Traction program"
Switch to right to turn on and to the left to turn off.
This turns on theTraction program and is for locking the longitudinal and transverse diffs. Up to 30km/h and automatically unlocks at 40km/h.
Hope that makes sense.
Grant.

There is also a idiot light blank in the speedo that you can pop in a blub and that will light up green when traction is working as well. Seems Porsche took that out because it goes off a lot. I put mine in :-)
As already mentioned, don't turn it unless you are stopped.

It might be in the oil gauges, can't really remember as I don't have the car with me today. Sort of forget those things you just get used to driving the thing, someone will confirm. There are a few idiot lamps in there, ABS etc and think its on the right side of towards the top.
One is green and has the same 4WD symbol on it. When you start up it will stay dark because there is no blub in it. Stick a blub in there and it will light up everytime the traction control kicks in.

preface: yeah I know I'm weird...
I still would love to be able to manually lock up the rear and center diffs at higher speeds, or over-ride the speed-cut-out of same. It's just the way I got used to driving Quattro's with lockers and it suits me. Also ideal brake-force distribution is a fair trade for some front-end push in my opinion. I just really hate ABS...
I've thought about removing the automatic system and replacing with manual hydraulic control of the lockup cyls on the tranny as a method to accomplish this.
