Default Big Red upgrade - what parts needed?

I'm contemplating upgrading my brakes to 'Big Reds', and it looks like it's actually cheaper to do this by buying all the parts from a Porsche dealer, than by getting one of the kits from FVD or similar. This assumes that I've got all the right parts - I think I need these:

993.351.425.10 993TT front caliper left 44/36mm
993.351.426.10 993TT front caliper right 44/36mm
965.351.045.00 965 3.6 Turbo2 front disc left 322/32mm
965.351.046.00 965 3.6 Turbo2 front disc right 322/32mm
993.351.949.00 Front pad set
993.352.421.00 993 standard rear caliper left 34/30mm
993.352.422.00 993 standard rear caliper right 34/30mm
951.352.041.91 964RS rear discs 299/24mm x 2
965.352.939.04 Rear pad set
965.351.096.00 Damping pad 44mm x 4
964.351.096.01 Damping pad 36mm x 4
965.352.096.01 Damping pad 34mm x 4
964.352.096.00 Damping pad 30mm x 4
964.612.363.01 Pad wear sensor front x 2
964.612.365.01 Pad wear sensor rear x 2
965.355.305.01 965 60 bar brake bias valve
999.067.041.09 Caliper to adapter mounting bolts x 4
Front caliper mounting adapter x 2

I think that's what comes with any of the kits - is there anything I'm missing? That lot comes in about 20% less than the kit, which will cover the cost of repainting the rears red, and for upgrading the master cylinder to a 993 one with this lot (for a C2):

993.355.910.00 993 brake master cylinder
993.355.023.10 993 vacuum cannister
993.355.301.00 Gasket
993.355.162.03 993 master cylinder support

That looks correct to me, and I also bought the parts from the P-dealer because they had the best prices.

One suggestion though is to wait with the master cylinder parts until you have tried out how the brakes works on your car. Some people complain about a soft pedal but my brakes became firmer/better after this upgrade than before. I have the 3,6 turbo rear calipers but that shouldn't matter.

Yep, looks like you have everything on the list, thats what i used including the 993 M/C you will however need to make up some brake pipes to the M/C as the 993 M/C has different size threds, check out the pics

The total for the top list comes to £2250 including tax in the UK - that's all from an OPC except for the adapters from 9M, with a 10% PCGB discount. The FVD kit here is £2765 for basically the same parts. The master cylinder upgrade would be another £250.

Thomas, I will probably wait until I've tried the brakes before doing the m/c, especially as fitting that promises to be a bit more tricky.

Thanks for the info,

Ian

The cheapest way to do this upgrade is to buy 928 GTS calipers (about $270 per caliper from the dealer, brand new!) and 993 rear calipers (I got some used for $200 for the set) and then adapters from FVD - you end up with black calipers, but it's pretty cheap and the braking is fantastic!

Did you make up the brake pipes yourself, and if so are there any special tools needed (I assume a pipe flarer of some kind)? Also, did you re-use your caliper mounting bolts, or get new ones?

Thanks for the pics, looks good with the yellow calipers.
cheers

Hi Garrett,
Do you have the part nos. for the 928 calipers? I tried to work it out from PET, but knowing nothing about 928s, couldn't decide which were the right caliperrs.
Thanks
Ian

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the master cylinder is a dangerous step to skimp on. Seems there is an issue with the reservoir being too small on the 964 master cylinder for the larger displacement of the caliper bores (larger diameter on the "true" Big Reds), and when your pads get thin, so much fluid is displaced from the master cylinder reservoir to the caliper body behind the piston, that there is risk of losing your front braking power altogether - not a pretty picture. I'll try to find the book and follow up with another post. Of course, just because it's in print, doesn't mean it's true.

IanR,

I may be able to get you a better price on these parts with a source direct in Germany(at Porsche). You would have to pay upfront but I'm not out to scam you. I don't know where you are but I am in Hertfordshire.

If you PM me with a contact no. we can discuss if you like......

I have this set-up on my car but not the 993 master cylinder. I heard the worries to but I have been fine and I think you would be too without it but it's your call.

With the pound to dollar exchange rate, you can get a full set in the US for $2000. Even with shipping, its still cheaper.

Yeah I'd skip them also. I did 3 days back to back with my original master and everything was fine. Never had beak fade.
