Default 964 Oil line renewal(s)....

Hello,

Reading several topics about leaking oil lines, see the pics, read the horror stories... To avoid all this I want to replace them all during the winter.

Questions:
- which oil lines tempt to go leaking ? Is their a certain age or mileage noticeable in which all oil lines are going wrong?

- does someone have any pics of all the oil lines up and around the engine and thermostat area?

- do the oil lines prone to leak at the joints or is the metal part just rusting away or is the rubber drying out?

Hope you can help me.

thanks in advance,

Last year all the rear (engine compartment) oil lines were replaced (@$300). I just replaced the two front lines to R front oil cooler (@$800 ). They were the only original lines on the car but were showing their age and leaked a little @ the fittings. I purchased the lines from my local dealer due to time constraints. If I had had a bit more time, I would have had Earl's build them (much cheaper and probably of =/> quality than OEM). If your lines are original I suggest you replace them soon. One ruptured line could lead to a blown engine.

On mine it was just seeping through and I replaced the lines in right rear wheel well. I used Porsche parts that fit. The ends of my old lines would swivel and I don't know how you would have someone build new ones from old fittings with any quality approaching new build. Once every 14 years you should be able to spend for parts that are new and fit.

OK, thanks for the information.
But which oil lines did you replace ?

The ones running to the oil tank ? Or are there any oil lines running from one side of the engine to the oteher side of the engine ?

I'm new into 964, I only have a lot of experience with SC's... (I can "dream" the parts )
Which of the oil lines is the most important and most prone to leak ?
Anyone has some advice about this?

Thanks,

I replaced 6 hoses: the hose from the right side of the engine to the al tube and then the short rubber hose to the tank, the hose from the fill tube stub out to the tank, the hose from thermostat to oil filter, two hoses from thermostat to tank.

I did not replace the line from the bottom of the engine to the oil filter, it has shown no indication of leaking.

Maybe later this year I'll look at the lines going to the oil cooler.

Line from the oil filter console to the thermostat was the one that went for me--as far as I can tell it leaked at the joint between the rubber tubing and the swivelling metal line. I cut out two small rubber hoses from the oil resevoir to get at the other line, and were fine

OK, thanks again for the information & advice.

Does anyone has pics or a link to a site with pics of the oil lines?

Thanks,

Even better, I just found this link to all the images, or more directly the PET.

Also MS Road and Race has spare parts drawings for the 964. For example:
