Default My First proper project. Brakes.

Ok guys since I fitted new brake pads I had big problems. all the plates were in bad shape so I filed off the edges. But even after I filled away all the metal the pad still needed to be forced into place.

What I have now is very wooden brakes that feel like they are not working they were fine before.

I thought about upgrading to Big reds but with the cost of disks adapters and calipers themselves it was too much especialy as the next project is suspension.

So I bought these off ebay. a full set of calipers from a C4

I need my car every day so I cant afford for un expected little problems. This way I can refurb these and replace them at my leasure and then sell mine on.( who am I kidding I still have used spark plugs from my first car in the garage)

Now these calipers are in a lot better shape than mine but I want to totaly overhall them so I dont need to touch them for years.

any comments appreciated. my plan is.

1) remove plates and clean up.
2)clean and paint caliper where plates go with zinc oxide
3)clean up old plates and re-use if possible replace as needed
4) Re sprey calipers
5) replace all o-rings and dust covers( working on sourcing now) and re fit plates.
6)fit new bleed nipples
7 fit to car and feel smug.

I have one question. when I refit the plates which thread lock shall I use on the screws. Do I need a special hi temp thread lock?

Phil,
I didn't use thread lock on the screws, but I would recommend using stainless dome heads to fix the plates. Oh, and paint them red! And fit braided hoses at the same time - you know it makes sense..

Hi Phil,i am interested how you get on as i had the same problem when i had my front pads replaced;although my brakes work fine now-plenty of feel.
I noticed my rear pads are getting a bit low(just waiting for the sensor light to pop up) but i reckon the spring plates are going to be as bad as the front.
I would appreciate some piccies of the process to see if the plate replacement is within my limited mechanical grasp

oh yeah paint em red cus i, thinking of painting mine light blue when the time comes

If you order new spring plates the replacement screws are micro-encapsulated with hi-temp thread locker (greenish stuff in the photo below). I don't know the current brand but on previous models (930) Porsche used loctite 270.

Paint them red! Porsche still specify Loctite 270 for 964 spring plate screws.

Ok an update for those interested. Tonight at work(breaktime honest) I set to work removing the 8 screws holding in the plates on the front calipers using a blow torch to heat them first.
Some came out easy, some came out hard! but one is stuck in there like an Alabama tick. 2 others were troublesome but I managed to tap them round with a cernter punch this one is not having it and the spline is rounded.

Any ideas how to get this one out appreciated.

the silver ona blue car would look sharp; the blue would get lost. The yellow would be obnoxious, and the black just ordinary.

Warning......Old thread resurrection!

Does anyone know the dimensions for the screws used to hold the spring plates?

I need some to refurb some calipers that have the dreaded plate lift. I refurbed some calipers before and bought the kits shown in Jason's post above but from that experience know that the plates are usually fine so I only need to get screws this time.

Cheers Jevvy. Looks like I've just found the size required. M6 x 16 mm according to here:
