Question Can I change the bearing in the A/C compressor?

My A/C compressor makes a rather nasty noise, like a very worn bearing.
After removing the belt the noice went away.
So has anybody tried to replace the bearing or has seen any guides on this?

Are you sure it's the bearings, usually the clutch goes on AC compressors and they do rattle when they are going. With the AC on, can you see the clutch engaging with consistent motion or is it hesitating? If so, your clutch is going. Best thing is to get a rebulit compressor.

It started making the noise no matter if the A/C was turned on or not.
I loosened the belt a bit and then it only made the noise when the A/C was on.
I can move the axle by hand (from side to side) so I assumed it was the bearings on the axle.

I have done AC compressor bearings before although not Porsche ones. It's not a hard job you just need the right puller to get the pulley off without damaging it.
Good luck!

Porsche compressor is an off the shelf part not Porsche specific. You can get a different brand much cheaper then a dealer one.

Ok, thanks I will have an A/C shop emptying the A/C and then I will try to change the bearing.
-> Jim, do you have a link to a cheaper brand that will fit the C2?

The compressor is a nippondenso , japan made , parts can be bought from non porsche places . It should have an id tag on the side telling you the model # . it might be a 10P15C .
Its not a bad compressor from what I've read . Before you order any parts for it , pull it all apart and make sure its a good unit for a rebuild .
It might be cheaper to get another used one , I've seen some sell for very little .

http://search.stores.ebay.com/10P15C...QsifZ1QQsofpZ4

Item number: 7960116871 I'm not saying it fits but I'm not saying it does not . .$60 + $15

I finally got around to changing the bearing. It was a bit tricky since the A/C compresor manufactor has made a deal with the bearing manufactor about making the bearing in a special size that only the A/C manufactor can buy. But I found a company in the US that have A/C bearings made especially.
I just installed the A/C compressor again and the noise was back again
So unless there are more that one bearing in the compressor I'm afraid it the X (I don't know what the part thats driving the A/C belt is called....) that has a problem..

I had a new compressor installed and converted to the new style..

New out of the box it makes an annoying noise when the clutch is engaaged.

The shop says it is normal, when the clutch engages the compressor just makes noise and transmits this via the body.

Mine makes the noice without engaging the clutch.
Im just a little confused, since I have changed the bearing nearest to the A/C belt and when the clutch isn't engaged there really shouldn't be other things in the compressor which could make this noice.... But the noise is exactly the same as it was before I changed the bearing

Hmm, I had made a mistake putting the compressor back together, so the clutch was engaged all the time
The problem is solved, but now it won't engage because theres no pressure in the system.
I have started a new thread called "A/C compressor and 3 level pressure switch" for some advice.

Quick Reply: Can I change the bearing in the A/C compressor?
