Default Rocker Panels Suck

Whoever at Porsche designed these things w/ these sh**ty white clips should be demoted to janitor. If one doesn't snap in right then to get to it properly you need to pull another which breaks that one. I have to get this done today and am short one clip after starting w/ two extras. I fu**ing hate rocker panels!

That's all I've got to say about that.

I put some quick set epoxy glue on that one broken clip, pressed the rocker into place and held it until it hardened. It stayed.

I agree, it is a poor design that sucks. I do the same, epoxy glue the clip first and then tighten, not to tight.

Must have been one of those American engineers Porsche hired. You should take a look at some the Domestic molding clips, indicative of poor quality brought forth by cost control.

Jim, do you really think a $70,000 (1993 $$) car should have metal clips that don't break the first time you pull them off? Come on, really, you're asking for too much. Wait until Porsche is forced to start cutting cost and sources their parts from China like the rest of the world is going, paying $100,000 for a car will not buy you quality.

Must be why you see so many 964 cup race cars with sheet metal screws holding them on...

For the clips, I went to the dealer and bought a metric-s%$%t ton of them, and just replace them as needed. The threaded ones at the front of the car, and on the sharkfin I expoxied to the rocker, then just reassembled. I have done this 'treatment' 3 times in the last 2 months. Agreed, they suck.

Been there, done that, Epoxy works but I was tempted to remove all the clips and use screws. This was a street car though so I passed on the screws.

Did mine with clinch nuts, and counter sunk cap head bolts.

Redid mine with fiberglass resin. Roughed up the inside panel, dropped a piece of fiberglass cloth over the screw, then 'glassed 'em down. I dare them to come off. Only problem is, I can't get the rear-most plastic clip to go into the grommet. The sheetmetal gives too much. Any help here?

You have to be gentle AND firm with these panels, as with a woman!

I had a similar challenge. I ended up finding a wooden block and shaping it to fit behind the metal but have space for the clip. I was then able to press on the rocket and hear the "click". I got the idea from seeing rivet bucking blocks.

I hope this helps.

Ha, that post was 4 years ago and I still think the design is ****, although I haven't had too much trouble w/ mine lately....except the sail fins some.

I got tired of mine breaking every time I pulled off the rocker panel, so I replaced the plastic insert on the body with rubber grommets. You can get them from an electronics supply house. They are soft and but just enough to hold the white pins in the holes.
