Default What have you learned?

I learned a good way to get wheels clean after years (PO, not me) of neglect is patience, some good wheel cleaner, and a little steel wool. I used it only in the inner parts, and would entertain a home-respray and clearcoat to seal the deal. There was all kinds of crud and staining on the inner part of the wheel; most of it is gone now. There are numerous spots where previous wheel weights were applied/removed, and a few dark spots yet, but it's sooooooo much better than previous condition.

Now I might have a little time between houses and related projects for Porsche projects. We've listed the old house and are underway on the new house. Alex, my son, and I can't wait for a heated garage instead of freezing our hands off when cleaning in cold water and an unheated garage. I need to clean the ISV, get a new battery, replace ground battery cable (earth cable), clean other 3 wheels, replace tires, alignment, valve adjustment, oil change, tune-up kit, and if time permits, a wash and wax before May Concours event.

So what about you; what have you learned?

I've learned that this is the first time you have cleaned your rims!

I applied a hard paste wax to the inside of mine. It helps significantly in the short term but you need to reapply yearly to keep the effect going.

How is your garage going to be heated? Radiant floor heating or electric?

Default Ouch!

I learned how NOT to remove a hard brake line.

Actually, I knew I'd bugger it up but it was frozen from rust so I had no choice - a new set of 4 is already on order.....

Thats why I didnt change to the SS lines i bought. Mine are frozen at the connector to the LONG line. That looks to be big bucks if those got messed up
Didnt learn anything but do like the new trim rings I put on the instruments.

My front ones are too - I got the short hard lines off the front calipers with no problem but the flexible line is frozen to the hard lines attached to the car.

I had bought cheaper flare wrenches which did not help so I've ordered Snap-On flare wrenches and been spraying the connection with Liquid-Wrench. Once the new flares show up, I'll (gently) try again. If it stays stuck solid, I think I'll admit defeat and let my wrench give it a try. It is too bad as my new Big Reds arrived and I was keen to get them on (my God - they are huge!).

Marc
p.s. So, in keeping with the thread and so this is not a total hi-jack: I learned when to give in.

Little tip for you Marc, coat the line, threads and inside of the nut with antiseize. A little goes a long way, and the nuts will not stick to the line when you go to take them off again in a few years.

I learned that with a little patience (though not much) and a strong back, you CAN move a 1000lb lift over 15 ft of dirt and gravel even though it only has like 1/2 inch of ground clearance. Oh, and that should be followed with a heavy dose of ibuprofen...

Lift in, ramps built, car raised. Awesome.

Also learned how the lower front plastic grill thingy is properly installed. Looks much better now withouth the center splitter thing drooping.

I can confirm you're sick Larry but what a great sickness.
I learned that spring is nowhere to be seen with snow, wind and almost freezing temperatures for the rest of the week.

It sure is nice being able to sit down and look up to work on stuff as opposed to laying on your back
I bought clear plastic corner molding and attached it with velcro strips at about the point the gas cap is on the sides of the ramp as guide post when driving on. i park on top of mine so it makes it a whole lot easier and you dont need someone to guide you on. With the velcro you can pull them off when working on the car. Mine are about 3' long and wont scratch the car.

jimq, that is a great idea!
I am thinking maybe some PVC pipe in a slip in mount... hmm... hadn't even thought of the concept. Thanks!

I was doing it solo (my 2.5 YO son was no help!) and had to keep getting out and looking... backing up, etc.
Now if only I knew about these lifts when I poured the foundation for the shop, could have sunk it into the floor... oh well.

This is my new favorite tool... probably for some time to come. This will make doing the springs/shocks a pleasure.

I suppose that's rhetorical, but the answer is: They never do.

I learned that putting together some IKEA furniture bears a remarkable resemblance to working on the 911. Barely enough access to get to the fasteners which are recessed in a hole, hands are mostly in the way of seeing what you're doing so it's done entirely by touch, once the nut is started on the bolt (after several dozen attempts with cross-threading as the result ) the wrench can only be turned about 1/16 of a turn so you have to flip and turn, flip and turn...and then you do the other five nuts. Ten minute job - takes an hour. Just like the 911.

I learned that riding my new-to-me '94 KLX650R at the nearest indoor MX-track results in lots of fun. I also learned that once the bike and I are airborne the collective intertia is LOTS (me=225lbs, bike=318lbs). But the suspension seems for the most part up to the task. I hope to learn my new WEVO engine mounts are in as well.
