As for club racing, It's about time Harvey !!! You might want to find a 964 RS ( US Cup) rather than a RSA though. You and Forklift will both be welcome additions.
Thanks Bill! I am hoping to make Summit Point and maybe the VIR race this year (is there a VIR race?). It might be 2007 though, not $ure yet. I am taking the rest of my a/c system out today and should be close to 2,760 with the sunroof. When I go from a bar to a cage the s/r will go as well. I agree about getting a real RS. There is a clubsport in the PCA classifieds as well as a 3.8 RSR. I plan on just having fun and trying to not come in last. I will probably be driving my car to the track on Toyos, so that should be interesting.

I just joined Red group this year and have passed a few 993s also.

Bill, will you be at the Zone 2 VIR?

and on topic.....

I prefer the look of the 993, but the "feel" of the 964. Or at least I prefer mine with no power steering. I still like the look of the 964 of course, but a good looking 993 is the best looking 911 ever made IMO. Especially wide body S's and turbos.

BTW, I am in the boat of trying to decide whether to sell my "just rebuilt" 964 for a 993.

Ditto...My car is going through a rebuild now. What I'd be afraid of is after rebuilding my entire engine and interior and then selling, would I put myself in the same position again in a 993. I don't think the checkbook can take it if I had to do the same thing to a 993. For now, I'll probably stick with my 964 and enjoy it for once. Come to think of it, I only had my car on the road 1-2 months since I purchased in June 2005....yikes. Can't wait to have it back.

I just bought my 964 and winter has kept it a secret agent car (undercover). Soooo no expertise re track or road but, I spoke with local Porsche guys and their mechanic and they all told me that if I was interested in an air cooled Porsche that late 80's to at most end of 964 run 1994 would be the way to go as almost all the problems were predictable and fixable. Told me to pick the car I liked the look of and buy one that I had inspected to get the Porsche in the best condition I could get (not the latest model I could afford if it meant sacrificing quality as they all will cost you something after you buy them). My PPI guy spent a significant amount of time sitting looking over all the paperwork that came with the car to get a sense of the car's mechanical history to see if it was a troubled child and what had already been replaced by 53,000 miles. I like the 993 rear flare but LOVE the more traditional headlights (why oh why did they feel the need to push them down?). And the wife liked the front of the car so much especially sitting looking out at them that I had to go with the 964 overall. Then I tried to get a later model in the 964 run to allow Porsche to correct any first model year issues like distributor vent issues etc and I ended up with a 1994. So much is a gut walk around and feel good thing I think when you are comparing 993 to 964, Just be sure to get a car after a good PPI and try to get good maintenance documentation...seems to be a helpful thing to predict the future according to all I have read re recurrent problems and what may need updating. Either car is a Porsche so you will love it. Bill

I've had a 95 993 S and it was flawless for the 2 years I had it except for tires and a tune up. Other than lowering it, which I did not consider at the time, I did not see any need for any mods. It was more comfortable to drive than the 964 and felt more solid. However, saying all that and owning both models, for my next choice, I would opt for a 964 turbo.

It's mostly cosmetics I'd say, and not having to do valve adjustments on the 993, although I've heard that the fancy 993 valvetrain takes away some of the great air-cooled motor sound.
Also remember if you're on a budget that if X amount of dollars will buy you a 964 with 60K on it then that same amount of $ will buy you a 993 (most likely a '95) with 90K on it. What's it worth to you?
If the snow melts by next Saturday I hope to be driving the 993s of two PCA friends. A 95 and a 96 back to back. I'll report back....

Default 993

actually the 993 is nice , i am just old school. and the 964 is the most updated body you can get that still has the old school lines, never did like the accordian bumpers on the sc, but love those fuch wheels. as long as you like it that all that matters seeing your the one paying for it !!!!! when i went to the german fest in ventura there were only a couple of 964 so go figure. each model has its pro's and con's. owning one is priceless................

Jim, I don't think you need to worry about coming in last . Even the D class RSA's at 2760 can do well against the heavier 993's. I'm not sure yet, but I suspect the Cayman S will eventually be the ringer in D. Regardless, you will have a lot of fun. The 964 RS Clubsports that you see advertised on the PCA site are all in Europe. It's a challenge to get them imported particularly if you want them street legal since you have to comply with all the US federal regs.. There are about 2 here in the US. If you want a 964 RS, the best option in the US is the US Carrera Cup, of which there were originally 45. Less now since some were converted to 993 RSR's or 964 RSR's and raced back in the early 90's. A few others have been lost to accidents as well, but you can still find them if you look hard enough.
My driving schedule this year will mostly involve racing. I just got back from running the Rolex 24 at Daytona in a GT3 Cup with Autometrics. It was a tough week for us and we retired after about 4.5 hours due to a blown engine. I'll be racing my 964 at Sebring, Road Atlanta, WG, and possibly Road America. Then CMP and Roebling. I'm not sure if there will be a VIR race this year. If they have one I'll try to make it. That track is in such high demand for DE's, it's hard to get a race there. I usually try and do the Metro WG DE and the Potomac at VIR, but that will probably be about it for DE events. Good luck getting started and if you need any advice you can PM me.

Bill Martin

Sorry for the hijack, I personally prefer the 964, because it more closely resembles the 911's I grew up wishing I had while I was driving a VW Beetle. I will say that the 993's are great cars and I remember the first time I ventured in to a showroom ( not ready to buy of coarse ) and saw one. It was a silver coupe with dark red leather interior. Wow what a sweet looking car it was.

Guys,

thanks for your views.

In Australia were not as fortuntae as thosde of you in the US or Europe. A good example of a 964 are still bringing around USD 40-45k ( price when new was 150k) and 993's bring USD 57k and up.

So these cars are not cheap by any stretch of the imagination.

That said, when the right one comes along at the right price through following this board I'll be well placed to know what to look for without having to spend big dollars on getting those hidden problems fixed.

Thanks again

Jim

I dont have any experience with a 993 but didnt really like the headlights......its that classic timeless 911 look that did it for me with the 964 as well as that superb engine noise.
With the 993 i would have had to spend an extra $20,000. Right now i can have fun with the 964 and in a year or two look at a 996.

I had owned 2 964s and now have a 993 C4. All very nice cars. The 993 does everything better, but I still miss that rawness in the 964. My next car will probably be a 964 turbo 3.6. Yeah...that will be my "dream" porsche.

I couldnt justify the small differences for the higher price on a weekend toy. Besides i think the front of a 993 looks more like a Japanese car then a 911 when coming from behind. To me a 911 will have the raised fenders and lights. Now a 997 , hmm maybe I could overlook the lights

If you want to see out of the car, get a 964.
if you want to look through the parked wipers get a 993.
