When I bought my car, I got a 964 because I couldn't afford a 993. Soon afterwards, I could afford a 993 - and much preferred the looks - but had spent so much on the 964 it never made sense to change.

I guess tastes change - because now, I'm really not really sure I do prefer the 993 looks. They do look far more modern than the 964 - but these days I do prefer the classic look.

If I decide to get back into Porsche ownership after selling mine, I am really not sure which I'd buy now. I suspect I would tend towards a 964 - and I never thought that would be the case.

For me is always hard to choose between P-cars, in great shape, from 1950 to 1998...got to drive them and ask your heart...there's no easy answer here!

Good luck...

There are very few Porsches I wouldn't love to own. (Not that interested in a 924 or a 996)

I would say that the 993s are newer cars, and I believe they require less service and have more of the bugs worked out of them than 964s. Especially compared to the early 964s. Not so much the later ones.
However, they don't have the classic porsche looks. (Dont get me wrong though. They are a hot car. )

If you enjoy doing your own work, and dont mind the rougher edges, the 964 can be a better value for your $$. If you want to own a great porsche with fewer hassles, and don't mind spending the extra up front, the 993 is probably a better option.

Why compromise... get one of each.

Seriously... it is a nice problem to have and you can't go wrong on what you decide. Both are great cars/classics. Buy the one you feel more passionate about and never look back.

When I was looking for 911s some 6yrs ago now I really wanted a 993RS but as they were £55k+ at the time I couldn't afford one and I reasoned that with a few upgrades a 964/993C2 could be made to perform in a similar way for about half the money

The choice was between slightly leggy early 993s and mint 964s and in the end I bought a 95 993C2 although I never actually owned it or maybe I did lol. Anyway I actually ended up with 964C2 that I have to this day.

IMO the 993 is a better car than the 964 if you ignore the questionable looks and inferior build quality but at the time the small advantage the 993 had over the 964 wasn't worth the extra cost premium. Since my intention was to modify, which does nothing to preserve resale value, I was better off with the cheaper car and the improvements I made to the 964 made it superior to the stock 993 for me anyway.

To a large extent this holds true today. A 993 is better but debatable whether its worth the price premium and if you intend to modify you're better off with the 964.

I was talking to a fellow MINI Cooper owner on AIM (at the time I already had my 74 Targa) and he was telling me how great the MINI was - I told him that it was fun, but if I could find a decent 993 for anything close to my price range I would drop the MINI like a hot potato... I went to a local dealer site and lo & behold - a clean 964 coupe. I checked it out during lunch and made up my mind that evening.

I like the 993, but the 964 was very much "in my price range" and an easy sell for the wife.
I now find the 964-isms endearing.

The 993 can be modded too. In general, newer cars will outperform older cars, stock to stock or modded to modded. I've owned a 964 cab, a 993 C4S and now a 993TT. Each has its own charm and personality. I agree the 964 is the last of the "classic" shaped 911 but IMHO, the 993 is the best looking 911.

964 all the way! You can't get this model in a 993!!!!
also check the link below my sig for the link to more pics!
In addition of you will check www.renntech.com and go to news you'll see how few 964s were built for North America compared to the 993s. They're a rare breed that will be very popular with Porsche enthusiasts. And of course my wife has her 91 Black Cab (replacing her 90 White Cab shown in the first image[/b]

No 993 equivalent for this one!

Whether the 993 is really a new car or a revamped 964 is equivicable I guess. I did say I thought stock the 993 was better but modified is a different issue; Lots of the improvements on the 993 were marginal and can easily be improved on in a 964 by well known workable modifications and many of these mods are the same as for improving a 993 so for me if you're going to do the same changes to either to end up with the same result you may as well start with the cheaper car.

The 964 has added advantages. Here in the UK we can decat the exhaust on the 964 which more than makes up for the supposed 993 superiority in that area. The 964 is more tuneable because it has superior cylinder head design ( when they're not leaking lol) which can support more power than the 993 heads. As for the crank, well they went back to the 964 for the 993tt.
