Wow, Full Concours you’re crazy! . But judging buy the looks of the undercarriage you should do well.
I always go into a concours with the mentality that my real goal isn’t to win. It’s primarily to make my car better cosmetically for my own enjoyment.
You were right I Was crazy. With my luck my car was judged with the sun in just the wrong location for a full 20 minutes or so. 10 min earlier or later you wouldn't have seen anything. It was like being under the dentists lamp. Although IMO the Engine Judge was a bit harsh on everyone but especially on me. Even I would be hard pressed to deduct for some of what was deducted.
So I ended up with a 297.8 out of 300 with 1.6 points being deducted for the engine alone. He deducted
.4 points for this hose. Since this was a zone event we were instructed at the Judges meeting to deduct only .1 point for most items even if multiple found. Apparently he has his own way of judging which is fine so long as it is equal across the board.
another .5 points for my preparation of my hoses.
Another .4 points for corrosion on my hardware.
The one I love the best was the .2 points for a dirty fan.
So I didn't win but I had a good time except for the Bridal party drinking too much and my neighbor was up praying to the porcelain god to the point I couldn't sleep.
I did have an opportunity to have my car together with my friends 94 as well.
So you are correct I am crazy for doing this sport and honestly we need to revamp the program otherwise it will be not long before it is a forgotten one.
PS: I will be swapping the parts shown but honestly not sure why.
Nice trophy made specially for John Paterek. He has had several posters made as trophies over the 40 years of Zone concours. Of the 15 I think I have 8. Was a nice time would have been nice to see more day trippers but was a light turnout.
Wow, that judge was tough but if he was judging all the other cars equally I have to imagine you still did well relatively speaking. Still you got a great score if you take away the engine reductions. And that corrosion is minuscule, hard to believe he even found it!
Truthfully the whole concours seen is a bit confusing to me anymore. Having come from MB Concours where originality was king I see that Porsche uses a differing approach where modifications are allowed and originality doesn’t matter anymore. So you could technically install aftermarket hardware on your car or paint it or whatever and the judge would deduct less points. They don’t care about modifications but god forbid if you leave your garage door opener in the glove box! To me the whole point of concours is the preserve the car to as close as it left the factory. I appreciate that they started creating different classes but this past weekend I learned that even the unrestored class no longer cares about originality as long as 75% of the original car is in tact. So I can run my RUF wheels on my 964 and enter unrestored class.

Yeah it has always been a cleanliness contest. Which is a good thing for preserving your car. My car is about to turn 39k miles and looks like new to the average person. After 25 years it isn't bad and owning it for 16 years has made the car better than when I got it since I did a lot of Concours in the past. We have always been known as a tough region since John Paterek started our program along with the Zone 1 Program 40 years ago. He is well known for his work and Pebble Beach winning 356 America Roadster now part of the factory museum. He has been a huge asset to us and has taught many Parade Judges and winners. The local region was about educating the novices and preparing the veterans for Parade. The Zone is supposed to be a step further to prepare cars for Parade although it was usually held in May prior to the Parade itself. This year was a mixup which killed attendance. Like the MB the Ferrari club Judges the same way. In that case my car would be dinged in other ways but I like my car my way and i have the original bits. When you get to PCA Parade level you have choices of either preparation or preservation. Preservation is about originality and cleanliness although at that level they would deduct for things like incorrect wheels and even check to see that tool kits have all the factory supplied bits. They do allow 25% of the topside to be painted although they don't meter the cars and some play games.
I enjoyed doing Concours for a long time and i will still support our program but I have become more addicted to working on these cars than cleaning them lately. I do enjoy taking someones messed up car and rebuilding it and the OCD part of me can't help but clean the parts before replacing them somethings most working on the mechanics of a car wouldn't consider doing.
I do get a bit annoyed when a Judge, Judges outside the prescribed rules. But that is the subjective nature of the sport. I appreciate the trophies and the poster will be framed and hung on the new walls I just made in my house projects but the score sheets are my true trophy and inevitably I get dinged for some phantom dust or slight marks since they can't find anything else. It would have been nice to have a score sheet that reflected the rules. It would have been quite close to 299.x IMO if everything was as it should be.
One last shot a friend sent me of the color cobalt taking on its purple hue in the sunlight.
