Unhappy Power seat goes "chunk..chunk"

Hello All,
Since its been freezing cold in Virginia, I've been tinkering, not driving. I've found that the power passenger seat on my 94 cab is at the end of its rearward travel, and now it won't come back forward. When I depress the switch, I can just hear a "chunk" sound, like its trying to go but won't.
Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot or repair this problem?
(I'm not used to power seats. My first restoration project was an extraordinarily rusty Healey 3000, and I'd sneak around the back country roads at night sitting on a galvanized bucket turned up side down. Those were the days!)

Jeff,

It sounds like the drive shaft which controls the forward/back movement has jammed. I had the same problem on mine. I managed to fix it by just unplugging the drive shaft, pressing the forward/back switches a few times & it freed it. Re-connected the drive shaft & the seat has been fine since!

To access the drive shaft, you need to remove the plastic cover which is at the front of the seat (2 screws I think), and the drive shaft just pulls off. You may need to get a new drive shaft though!

Jeff,
Obvious thing, I know, but have you tried putting pressure on the seat from behind whilst you operate the switch. Won't fix anything, of course, but it might just 'rescue' it for now.

Thanks Andy and Jon, I did try to push the seat a bit, but it is as solid as a rock. It has hung up like this a couple times before, so now I want to fix it while it is stuck. It has always stuck at the rearmost position. I'll work on that driveshaft Andy mentioned and see where that takes me. Best to you, Jeff

Jeff,

Co-incidentally, my seat also used to jam either all the way forward, or right back too!

Good Luck!

I had the same problem with my seat. After removing the seat, checking cables etc I found out that it was the switch itself. So my tip is to undo the two screws that holds the switch. Pull it out from the side of the seat, check the cables and spray on some WD40, CRS 5-56 or similar. That did it for me at least. I think the cause of this could be that you normally don't use the switch very often. The best way to keep things working on the car is to use them, even if don't have to

I currently have this same problem. I undid the cover, and to test what was wrong, unplugged the connections at the front motor and switched them, 2 blade type connections. This way it moved forward (but not back now). So now i have to investigate the switch itself, maybe it just needs cleaning and use.

Is this problem possibly related to the TSB I found on the NTSB website?
